As an RC-er, I have mixed thoughts about drones, but this cannot do the model aircraft hobbiests any good at all. One bell end and we are all tarred with the same brush.........

It'll probably turn out to be an attempt to get "fantastic" video of "real" planes landing.

Here in the US you have to register to fly anything over 0.55 pounds (0.25kg) and it must be labeled with your registration number.


Of course, if you don't label it, how are "they" (no one seems to know who the enforcers are) going to find you?

And, of course, terrorists aren't going to care about registration.


On the other hand, IF they can locate the idiots, I'd say a five to ten year sentence should be a minimum. After all, would you simply fine someone for giving a loaded gun to kids in a daycare center because no one was hurt?

Suppose the RC, whatever, had entered an engine?

Just because the plane didn't crash, should they get less time for not bringing it down?

Wonder how long it'll be before one of these Young Cocky Arrogant Ba'foons, does this in the US, and then screams he has rights to Fly Drones anywhere he wants, even in Flight patterns that interfere with other Air Traffic !!

Just a matter of time, before the Idiots & Morons pull such an Arrogant stunt, just so they can post their silly Video's to YOU TUBE or Live leak, to see how many Hits they can get to become popular for 15 seconds amongst their YOU TUBER' Buddies, and that's exactly what it boils down to - to !!

I foresee that pretty soon the uninformed politicians will just lump RC'ers and drone operators in the same group and make things more difficult for everyone. The RC community really needs to enlighten the politicians as to the differences between the two groups and fight to keep things distinct before they are restricted and over regulated into oblivion. As you said Matt "all tarred with the same brush" simply because that's easier for the politicians to do to appease their constituents. Common sense will have nothing to do with it.

I work with three RC pilots. The rules were well known before. Anyone who wanted to join in learned all of the FAA and local laws. At least as far as the local area was concerned.

They laugh at the new registration laws. They know that the new law won't stop the idiots or the people who just don't care.

I did ask a couple of the guys from work, if they had seen any government types, and they said that they haven't even see a police car drive by. Usually it's about five to fifteen flyers on a good flying day.


Question - How many hundreds of thousands of FAA types would it take to visit just the popular & legal RC sites in the US.

Think about it. At 3.8 million square miles (9.9 million km2) for the USA, and considering that you can't even hear most RC planes from a half mile away, they aren't going to find much (whoever "THEY" are).

Heck, they couldn't even detect the radio signals controlling a drone at a major target - Heathrow Airport.
