The decision is not believed to be connected to the Shoreham air crash which killed 11 people last year.

It is and it isn't. The MAA has always had tighter regulations regarding displays than the CAA and have made a simple decision based on the risk to sea borne traffic. As such, this is unrelated to any AAIB or CAA regulation.

As the AAIB bulletin reported last week, non-paying airshow viewers, including the dreaded "freeloader", should be afforded more protection than paying punters.
