My Honda Civic has an idiot light that tells me if a door is open. A multi-million dollar aircraft doesn't.

Open door forces flight to turn around

A passenger plane carrying 163 people was forced to turn back 40 minutes into the flight after it was discovered one of the plane's doors was not completely shut.

The flight, operated by low-cost Korean Air subsidiary Jin Air, left Cebu in the Philippines on Sunday, bound for Busan in South Korea.

A public relations officer with Jin Air confirmed the incident to CNN, saying a noise alerted staff to a gap in the door, prompting the pilot to return to Cebu.

At the time of the incident the Boeing 737-800 was at an altitude of 10,000 feet

I think you can be pretty sure there is a warning light on the cockpit panel/systems for open passenger doors - all doors. And hopefully a warning alert that would also warn against and malfunction in any warning systems.

Me thinks immediately 2 pilot error ....

A noisy door is a common problem on the 737NG. A whistling will not give a caution light as the problem is caused by the door seal not sitting properly when the door is closed. The fix is generally a quick lubrication of the seal with a petroleum jelly and then send it on its way.

I was maintenance shop manager at Organización VW Mexicana (OVMEX) in 1968, when VW 113 Sedans (real AiRCOOLED Beetles) made at Puebla's VW new factory, had hard door seals (too much time on the shelf before adding to new cars). One had to slam the poor door so hard, that they welded shut forever!! The solution was adding glycerine to the ruber seal & afterwards put talcum powder to dry it, then readjust the door lock.

Used to see daylight out of the door seals of the VC-10 when bashing the pattern!

Notice that fixes for aircraft have a high falutin' twist. Vaseline = Petroleum Jelly. Bend the metal thing = Reform part to fit. ), and the exit light bulbs can't be changed for a regular bulb from the hardware store. They've also removed the puke bags from the pocket in the seat in front of you, heaven knows what they use now.
