I just found out that an old teacher of mine passed away recently and his funeral was last Monday. I didn't know him very well but I guess you never really know old school teachers, his name was John Charrot. One thing I have just found out is that he was a member of 138 squadron in WWII. Here is a piece written by him.

I didn't have a clue about this.

Most of my old School Teachers must be well over 150 years old by now...

...but I still remember them....We were just taught the three "R's" in those far-off days; readin', ritin', and 'rithmatic...no fancy stuff!

Paul you just gave me an idea. Instead of the 3 R's maybe today's students need be taught the 6 R's...

But these days one doesn't dare! It's considered "abuse" and "hurting their little psyches" and all the other wonderfull catchphrases used to justify people sticking their noses into other's business...

This reminded me of Doug Gregory who until recently was a regular visitor to Popham Airfield. I bet most of his former pupils have no idea of what he did before becoming their teacher & what he did for a hobby after retiring. I logged in just to reply to that story. That was the most amazing story I've read in a long time. I knew the nazis were close to having the bomb, but never really knew what actually stopped them. and the conditions that these brave men completed their objective under is simply unreal. That's why they're still the greatest generation. Thank you all for your service and your sacrifices.

Looking forward 100 years, it will be extraordinary if any of this (ego) pampered generation rises above what was "ordinary" 50 years ago.

I suspect that when I was a little kid, back in the '50s, that there were many a teacher with a story well worth knowing.

The raid was considered by the Special Operations Executive to be the most succssesful act of sabotage of WW II. The story of the raid on the Heavy Water plant was made into a film called "The Heros of Telemark" starring Kirk Douglas.

Mr Charrot gets a mention in our local paper this week:
