Well it's a legal duty to have a current map and they are marked on paper maps, as well as GPS navs, even before they are built -- Also there are notams when new turbines, aerials, etc, are erected. Sad as that incident may be, it's also a pilot's legal duty to fly within safe boundaries and to know his position as well as the immediate weather forecast.

I agree with pete; A PIC's duty is to Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate. You have to pay attention where you're flying!

Commercial and IFR Ratings aren't a free pass to try and attempt a scud run. Waste of a good airplane, too.

The Seafury landed some 40 minutes later after have taken off from Halfmoon bay. You can't go 4 minutes without flying over an airfield in that part of CA. I wonder why he elected to fly to his destination.........

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

Well I held out long enough. I knew about the CA crash days ago, but thought it would be in bad taste to post it.
Since someone else has, I will comment:

The airplane that crashed, a C210, was piloted by a co-worker and friend.
My prayers go out to his mom and dad, and his wife. All are hoping beyond hope, simply because the news is my only means of current information. The fuselage has been located/recovered, but no information about the pilot.

Little is being said about the cause, and why the Fury continued on RTB.

He was an aviation enthusiast, and was chasing his dream. He was crew chief on the Sea Fury. Him and his dad both loved the old round motors. I worked with him for 3 years, and he was a powerhouse.
A musician, a great mechanic, and had a passion for things that fly.
It's hard to comprehend why he won't be coming in to work anymore.

A little perspective: enjoy your time here. As any of us know how risky flying these machines can truly be, and how a simple mistake can be catastrophic, our time can end without warning.

He will be missed,. He still had so many things left to do. Nothing short of a tragedy.

From that description of their combined interests, I assume that both pilots left together in the Cessna 210 and the Sea Fury, and were flying in formation with each other, intending to reach their final destination together?

Something went wrong and they collided over San Pablo Bay!

Sad outcome!

Well the aviation community suffered another loss today. At "Thunder Over Solano" airshow at Travis AFB, Fairfield, CA, a stearman augured in while flying inverted. Another legendary aviator killed during a performance.
