Well, there are many good reasons for people to disagree and protest about that airport project, have been for 40 years running. Opponents point out that it's going to enrich lots of corporate executives and shareholders at public expense, that it will destroy vast areas of farm land and introduce mass urbanization into a rural area, that it would be more cost effective to upgrade existing airports, and that the business projections and benefits of the new airport have been greatly exaggerated to get the deal done. Not to mention that local taxes will surely increase as time goes by, to support the infrastructure in that area. Noise and pollution are concerns, too, of course. Proponents say it will be good for business, will increase tourism for the area, boost prosperity, and allow the existing Nantes-Atlantique airport to be dedicated to freight.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is similar to a controversial project in own my hometown. A new downtown parking garage was proposed, land acquired, tenants evicted. Then the facts were revealed that existing parking garages downtown actually had low utilization, that the project's backers just wanted to make money on the deals, the construction, etc. The proponents had greatly exaggerated the need for and viability of another garage. The city would never have made any money from building another one. Opposition forces won. The parking garage was never built. But unfortunately, many businesses, some that had been around for a long time, had to close their doors.
