iPad Air or iPad Mini in the cockpit??

Postby FarmKid » Thu Nov 28, 2013 12:26 am

Hey Everybody,

So I'm considering getting a new iPad, but I just can't make the decision between the Air or the Mini. I think I would like the portability of the Mini, but I'm afriad I'd wish I had a bigger screen if I had the Mini. My biggest concern about screen size is for flying. I'd love to start using the iPad for flying, but I kinda think the screen of the Mini might be too small to really get the best use of ForeFlight. Then again, I also think the Air might be kind of cumbersome in the cockpit.

Overall I am leaning towards the Mini, but I want some outside opinons before I make a final decision.

So does anybody have any input, or personal experiences with one of the two?

Thanks in advance!

I don't have any personal experience with any of the iPads, but I do know some information about apple products. To me, the iPad mini with retina display would be a good choice because it seems compact enough to fit in the cockpit and, if reading would be hard to do because of the small screen for you, the retina display model of the mini would be a good choice. Both iPad's have the same processors (an A7) and they both have wifi and cellular options on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Hope this helps!

I fly a Nexus 7 with Garmin Pilot. It's about the same size as the iPad mini. My cockpit is small (Thorp T-18) and a 10" or full size iPad would just be too big. If you had more space in the cockpit, than the bigger size might be fine.

I've gone paperless and use the Nexus for everything, both VFR and IFR flying. Obviously, having more display area would be better, but I don't have any issues with the 7" display. I do fly a lot of cross countries, so I installed a USB port for charging in my airplane. That's one thing you have to keep in mind with the tablet, your charts can run out of batteries. You could use an adapter to the cigarette lighter, just make sure that the adapter can handle the airplane's system voltage (for 24V systems).

I have modified blend twice and still not operating so have taken to my Small store nowadays for them to kind as still under assurance. I also have voltage problem. How can I fix this.

A Kindle Fire HD is also a good choice. Though I revile the OS, it's small, with a good screen, and has all the apps and features you need. It's also half as expensive as an iPad.
