There's nothing new in this world of ours. I have a photo* of a 4-engined Handley Page Hastings transport aircraft being started using a similar method. This was at a RAF station in some far-flung outpost of the Empire. The main difference being that the engines are Bristol Hercules 14-cylinder radials & the rope is being pulled by a team of RAF airmen.

No Paul. The engines on early models of the Fairchild Packet were fitted with Coffman cartridge starters. These were commonly used on military aircraft of the period. The starting procedure is shown clearly in the film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IACjOvyx5hs&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I'm familiar with the Coffman Cartridge method of starting the engine(s), (as shown in the film), but my fascination was the ingenuity in dealing with a particular problem, in that case, by rebuilding the crashed aeroplane in the field (desert), and then flying it to safety....

...similar to the ingenuity of starting an aero engine using a length of rope... ....

Fortunately, a flat battery on my motorcycle just requires a the; "kick-start" to get it running!

I love novel (unusual) ways of doing things!

I have to say, I never thought of this back in my day. Damn this would have saved me alot of sweat and cuss words!

"Bump starting". I was never very happy with that...2nd gear, clutch in, run and leap onto the seat, clutch out...and the fear of everything going arse-over-tip...as it surely will!.... ... ...!

Have you seen the You-Tube video of picking your heavy bike up on your own, after it has fallen over...excellent tip!
(I needed to know that recently!)

No I haven't seen that one yet. But I sure know how HEAVY those street bikes get when resting
on there sidecover. Especially those old fully dressed honda goldwings.

My deal with this happened right here in the garage. I was sitting on her and started fiddling with something
down buy the transmission and before I knew it.. the bike desided to get heavier on one side for some reason.

Weird how that happens! It must have something to do with the rotation of the earth or something. ..

A wonderful tip for all Motorcyclists to practice, for when the emergency arises, and you are on your own, in the middle of nowhere, with no-one else around to assist you!!
(A good tip to put it in gear first to stop it moving!).
