I hope they're both around, successful and prosperous for a long time. If one ever did drive the other out of business... the airlines and ultimately the flying public would suffer. Competition is a good thing.

I dont think that one will take over the other, just that as each continues to develop new aircraft, one company will have better aircraft and be more successful than the other

At present though each company has aircraft that are better than some of the other companies and both companies are successful with neither taking any significant lead.

Airbus has clearly won that battle considering their first single aisle airliner completely trounced the 737 classic, and Boeings 737 NG was still unable to beat it. That's quite a feat. Not just to beat 1 generation of aircrafts, but the next one, aswell.

You do realize that we have sold over 6,000 737's right?  There are about 1,250 737's in the air at any given moment and one is taking off every 4.6 seconds.

To be fair to Airbus, Boeing do have a 20 year head start over A320 deliveries - if you look at the numbers the proportions appear to be almost the same - just under 3000 A320's in 18 years...

but I know more things about it than you guys do so all I can say is you will see

Maybe a little patronising to some of our members... ;)

Nice logic USMC_BEANS

The Airbus A320 entered service in the late 80's, which made the 737 Classic look ancient, it outperformed it grossly.
Boeings answer was the 737NG, and it is still not able to beat the A320.

That's the truth.

And any poster who loudly says "I work on the plane I know lots of inside info" is not a man I would take seriously. Just crying for attention.
It may not be the case, but that how it looks like.
What exactly is your position at Boeing? That is not a crime to post.

LOL!!!!!  Isn't that like comparing a DVD machine from one company to a VHS machine from another company?  Of course the newer machine will outperform the older machine.

How about the current A320 compared with the current 737?

You're not getting it.
The 737 classic was the 2nd generation 737s, first version came in 1983. (737-300 delivered to USAir)
Just 5 years later, Airbus had an aircraft that would easily outperform the 737s.
Boeings 737NGs which were introduced in the late 90's arent topping the Airbus A320, because A320 sales havent declined.
Boeing had the market for themselves for a long time, but now it's 50-50.

Boeing's answer came 10 years after the A320, and they are about evenly matched.

When the A320 totally outsells the 737 then it will be more successful, sales trends mean nothing.  I do know that we have over 1,000 737's on backlog and that figure does not seem to be slowing down in the least bit.  Basically Airbus has from now until they replace their single isle to sell 3,000 more airplanes, that is if  our plane magically stops selling.  That will be a lot of airplanes in a short amount of time.  I am a systems engineer in environmental control systems and the nitrogen generation system.  I am not crying for attention nor do I crave it from complete strangers.  I say that to qualify my statement that there are some really cool things that we are doing on that airplane that will improve conditions for those aboard and around the airplane.  I am also trying to explain our company policy towards smaller and more efficient aircraft rather than a double deck cattle car.  I think our 747-8 is just a stop gap for the big airplanes but is not the future our company is headed towards.  But I will leave it at that since I can see somebody goading this thread towards some sort of flame war about xx airplane company is better than yy airplane company.  Just remember that this market is cyclical, we had our down period a few years back with all the scandals, now it is Airbus' turn.  They will recover just like we did, its just how well they recover that will determine their place in the industry.

These types of threads usually sways from objective facts to patriotic emotions, thats correct.

I'm not a fanboy of either one of them.
They approach pilotage in a different manner.
But when it comes to performance, the A320 handed your behind on a platter to you.  :)

I posted earlier that I have no doubts the 787 and 748 will be fine aircrafts. Infact the 787 will probably blow everything away  :) Boeing hit a sweetspot.

I agree completely with your post.  A lot of the time people prefer Boeing cause they feel like its an american thing to do.  In the appearances category, Boeing takes the cake in my book.  I have only been on an Airbus a few times, and I have flown on Boeings a whole bunch.  Performance wise, the A320 is better than most of the 737 variants, but on the subject of the post I still believe that in this battle Boeing will come out on top in the end.  The 787 just promises to be such a great aircraft that the A350 has little chance against it
