Nato helicopters

Postby CaptainCub » Mon May 21, 2012 3:37 pm

What with NATO being in Chicago, over the last few days there has been this trio of Hueys flying above an area near where I live in the suburbs. Yesterday I took a gander through some Binoculars at them and saw they had the doors open on one side and there were guys seated with their feet on the skids. Couldn't tell if they were holding weapons, but considering I live near a major tollway and the secret service command post is supposed to be in a suburban office building or park, I wouldn't be surprised if that is what they were keeping an eye on since there are several office towers not far from where I live.  :)

If you look over London, you'll find something quite similar. I think they've got marine snipers mounted in Lynxs, and they also have cardboard signs to help deter attackers from the olympic games.

Yep, they'll be throwing cardboard at anyone violating Olympic airspace! ;D

I read something that they are snipers and have recently acquired the skill to shoot a person in another helicopter. As in kill the pilot of a hostile helicopter while shooting FROM a helicopter, that is a pretty amazing feat of marksman-ship.

Well first of all they try to get the aircraft out of the area, 'shoot first and ask questions later' is just James Bond's motto  :P  The aforementioned cardboard sign contains a radio frequency for the aircraft to tune to to get avoidance directions... Just in case they accidently stumbled inside the airspace.

I'm not sure that shooting the pilot is the best idea, but a quick look at the muzzle will probably deter most.

I would have thought that a mini-gun would be a bit more effective than pot shots from one aircraft to another ;D

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

You're talking about a country (mine) which can't even afford an aircraft carrier! It's a wonder we arn't using bows and arrows a la Agincourt!

I think you'll find we still have two aircraft carriers - the aircraft just aren't fixed wing. We also couldn't afford not to have aircraft carriers, as we couldn't afford to cancel the two QE class! ;D
