It's Phoenix...

Tragic, but just another sign of stupid decisions on the part of safety officials.  There's a reason the altitude was what it was.

However, I find it odd that the craft had terrain warning systems, an experienced pilot with knowledge of the area, and still hit the mountain.  Curious to see what comes out of the investigation.  I hope there was something else that went wrong, otherwise it's a needless tragedy caused solely by bad decision making when redefining the airspace

What was the point in that video, apart from some free publicity for the software company??

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

I wonder if the Pheonix Air Traffic Control Radar would have been alerted that the aircraft was likely to fly into terrain, with its height and direction showing up on the radar screen?

Does a filed Flight Plan under IFR, and being under the strict control of ATC, likely to prevent accidents of this sort?

Paul.

In my FS 2004 Flight Sim, a filed IFR flight plan under the control of ATC, keeps a very close eye on me, and generally "controls" my altitude and direction, and steers me away from various hazards!

Just completed a FS 2004 trial flight from Falcon Airfield (KFFZ), travelling eastwards. With the Altimeter reading 5,000 feet ASL, the Radio Altimeter registered 294 Feet AGL at the peak of the mountain.
Any flight below 5,000 feet ASL is sure to collide with the terrain.

Interesting, but still doesn't tell much about what caused it.  I wonder how much experience anyone on the plane had with that Honeywell unit, as if the plane was only with them for a week it's entirely possible they did not yet know how to operate it and chose to fly regardless because a GPWS is not essential.

I know it may sound morbid, but I always thought it might be interesting to be an NTSB investigator, figure out what causes these accidents to prevent them in the future.  Of course, while I thought it would be interesting, I never bothered applying :p.  Guess it worked out anyways ;)
