Miss Helen "Incident" at Legends

Postby mrjake2002 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 3:50 pm

Day 2 of flying legends- went to the school today for a different viewpoint, and as Miss Helen was coming in to land she seemed to lose airspeed. Her engine appeared to be spluttering and as it was throttled up, a large puff of smoke came from the exhausts.  She came down on the airfield quite heavily, and from our viewpoint, bounced pretty high (the whole aircraft could be seen over the hedge. Old Crow, who was behind her, put gear up and went round again, as did a couple of other things. On returning to the car, we heard over an airband that as someone wanted to depart, only the tarmac runway was in operation.

Seen this on UKAR... anymore info? There are some images there which show what happened -

Let's hope she's back before too long.

She was having a bit of trouble yesterday......she came in following the balbo and cut the engine on the runway and was brought to a halt just off the concrete...

Sounds like all is not good up the front. A brave decision to fly her today considering an unexplained(?) failure yesterday? Today's incident didn't sound too far away from being fatal, or at best, a lot worse.

Miss Helen doesn't have much luck. It was she that belly landed after an engine failure on the way back from RIAT a few years back.

There's a photo in the link above showing a fair bit of smoke coming from her engine on approach.

Let's hope she's back before too long.

Looks fairly unhealthy. In some ways lucky it appears to have been at the western end - the undershoot at t'other end isn't as forgiving.

I was there today. Didn't see what happened & the commentators didn't mention it. It was still out on the field when I left.

It was at the eastern end.

I wonder how the photographer go a picture of its approach from the left side of the aircraft then? ::)

Probably with one of the visiting aircraft.

Here's my view of it. Taken from in front of the Land Warfare museum on full zoom.

I was up near the ARC Spitfire Tr9 at the end of the show and got pictures of most of the Balbo landing. I didn't notice the smoke through my camera but she did land very short and bounced. Port U/C is well bust. She suffered a fuel leak on Saturday and did sound a bit rough when she test flew on Sunday before the show.
