If you bring a tent as far as Columbus... Split a plane with me from there.. I'm in 8-)
That's where we'd have to get creative on scheduling. Actual time spent AT Airventure, for me, would be two nights, tops. That's my limit for tent life, and community showers.. :D
Just going there.. landing in that storm of airplanes, IS the event, to me. The "midway" of displays is a one-afternoon distraction... The museum is good for a few hours... and an airshow (maybe two) would fill the rest of that time. By then, I've had enough. The most enjoyable part of while on the ground, is evening sessions with fellow pilot-campers. Talking planes by lantern and all 8-)
Ideally, I'd fly in on Friday, and leave on Sunday.. and then maybe spend some time flying Door County, Beaver Island, Mackinac Island.. that sorta thing.
I'm flying very near there, this weekend. Gonna go up near the Wisconsin/Michigan border and spend a couple nights at a friends cabin (landing at Crivitz (3D1)).
I'm pretty sure you'd want to spend more time at KOSH. I don't care if my two days are in the middle of the week, or on the last weekend. I could leave you there.. do my thing and pick you up on the way back.
What agenda did you have in mind ?
I would drive. I have enough fun trying to fly around here the week before AirVenture, it's almost too much for one person without being a chore.
It seems like everyone in the country funnels through here. Last year I went flying on the Friday before for a few hours to get some cross country time and all the normal CTAF frequencies everywhere were so busy you could barely get a word in. I just stayed away from anything busy and kept an eye out. On the way back in I got flight following from Madison Approach and at one point the controller gave me a traffic alert for five(!) different aircraft near me.
If you need an extra pair of eyes out for traffic and someone to split the fuel bill (or a 215 lb ballast), I'd be more than happy to offer my keen vision and thin wallet.
Welllllll... if we do cross paths; you and Rotty both, will fly in and out of KOSH. You HAVE to experince that, even if from the right seat. ATC is guys on lawn chairs along the way in.. and to reduce radio chatter, we pilots only get to do a wing-wag "wilco".. lol
