Organizing Airport Charts

Postby Xyn_Air » Thu Jul 26, 2007 12:34 am

I just found a great website for free airport charts with information on runways, taxi ways, and structures.  And, since I have pretty much free use of the laser printer at work, I have been printing out charts to use while (ahem) playing Flight Simulator (I know this is the Real World>>Real Avitation thread; the question is about the charts, and not Flight Simulator).

What I was wondering (and this could possibly be a truly trivial question) is how are airport charts normally arranged?  Are they arranged alphabetical by ICAO code, alphabetical by name of airport, alphabetical by city location, alphabetically within certain region groups, or some other manner which I have not mentioned?

I suppose that any manner of organization that helps me keep track of my own charts would work just fine, but I wanted to know if there was some sort of standard or official way these charts were organized.

Thanks for any help! ~ Darrin

If You're talking about approach plates, SIDs and STARs, they're usually  sorted by  City..

Like.. if you go buy "U.S. Terminal Procedures" (book of approach plates), they are available by region (usually a state or two) and the plates are listed by city, alphabetically..

Charts, as in VFR sectionals are regional.. and Low Altitude IFR charts are sorted by numeric region.

All the chart/information book I've used have been sorted alphabetically by (city) name. The reason the aren't sorted by code is that it's a lot easier to find a name than a (potentially very) random code.
