Gann's stories, like his flying career, were filled with colorful characters; pilots who seem to embody the spirit of aviation at the time. This guy is the leader of the search party... a seasoned old hand: calm, patent, and methodical. He's determined to expend as little energy as possible.
Proof of this is his interesting take on CRM: He pulls from his parka one of those extension-tweezer thingies...
And makes a minor adjustment to the radio.

As amusing as that was, this is even better:
They're really getting into the boonies now, and the terrain is forbidding indeed.
At last they reach the mark, and they split up to begin searching.
