Not much they can do until daybreak, but the search team carefully plans the exercise down to the last detail. All the guys are eager to rescue their comrades, but they must 'nt waste time blundering around, or risk losing another plane and crew.

They set off in close formation towards the last estimated position.

Gann's stories, like his flying career, were filled with colorful characters; pilots who seem to embody the spirit of aviation at the time. This guy is the leader of the search party... a seasoned old hand: calm, patent, and methodical. He's determined to expend as little energy as possible.

Proof of this is his interesting take on CRM: He pulls from his parka one of those extension-tweezer thingies...

And makes a minor adjustment to the radio. ;D

As amusing as that was, this is even better:

They're really getting into the boonies now, and the terrain is forbidding indeed.

At last they reach the mark, and they split up to begin searching.

Never remember the old Dak (DC3/C47) being that cold in the pointy end and I flew them in the Artic :).

Oh well...that is Hollywood I guess ;DLOL

Still a good story Sean.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
