Later our hero is sent alone with a recce photographer for a look at a heavily- defended chateau occupied by the Germans...
They get the pictures, but the photog is mortally wounded and the plane's hydraulics are shot up, so the pilot makes a crash-landing at the base... sadly, this was done with a real airplane.
This is probably the same real airplane, burning up.
As if that harrowing mission wasn't enough, HQ now wants the squadron to do the impossible... pickle some skip-bombs into the tunnel indicated, then flatten the whole site, as there's an underground V2 site there. To complicate matters, there are RAF POWs being held at the chateau, who are initially considered expendable... those rockets must never reach England!! After an uproar of protest from the pilots, a complicated plan is devised to hit the tunnel, save one bomb to take out the wall, then wait for the French partisans to get the POWs out before the whole place is blown to kingdom come. Piece of cake...
