Hey, you Swiss...

Postby Blackbird971 » Sat Sep 25, 2004 5:48 am

Maybe someone can clear this up for me...

I was running around A.net tonight and I noticed that I couldn't realy find any swiss aircraft without a large red crossed blaze on the tail, like this: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/669953/L/

GA singles, gliders, ultralights, Airliners (to a certain extent), helos,... everything.  Are swiss planes somehow required to have that on them? The ones that don't have the big blaze, at least have a little cross on the tail.

I'm not Swiss but the WHITE cross on a red background is the Swiss national emblem. Maybe they're just being patriotic.

I recall reading something about the cross that it's a symbol of their neutral standpoint - or something like that ???

pass me the polishing kit please...

Swissair has the swiss flag as logo... easy to recognise.
CAAC (former China Airlines) had it
Aeroflot had it, did go around for a while with a different scheme, but got back to the flag.

All BA aircraft used to proudly wear the Union Jack* on their tails until some bright spark decided this was politically incorrect & changed it. Biggest mistake they ever made. IMHO

*PS. Most people refer to the national flag of the UK as the Union Jack. This only applies when it's flown as a jack (a small flag flown at the bow of a ship). For other purposes it should be called the Union Flag.

I know that guys but go look at all the swiss aircraft at anet - you realy cant find ANY without it. I can't see every single pilot in that nation being that patriotic...

I assume you meant NOT all Swiss aircraft? ;)

However, if you look closely it does have a small Swiss emblem following the registration letters.

PS. Darwin Airlines seems a strange choice of name for Swiss based company. ::)

Yes, of course (I'm getting careless in my old age)

However, if you look closely it does have a small Swiss emblem following the registration letters.

Of course, typically, carrying the national flag is normal for any airline.  I took Blackbird's comments to mean that most Swiss airplanes have either an all-red tail with a white cross, or a significant red band with white cross (as in the  Swiss/Swissair, etc airplanes).

PS. Darwin Airlines seems a strange choice of name for Swiss based company. ::)

WIth all the shakeup in Swiss airlines recently, maybe it's appropriate - survival of the swiftest?
