Giant order for Boeing!

Postby Mr. Bones » Tue Jun 15, 2004 2:11 pm

the US Navy plans to retire their P-3 Orions. at this time, they are using 223 of them.

they ordered 109 737 MMA's (Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft ). price: 3,9 miljard billion but according to Boeing this can become 15 billion dollar in the next ten years! other companies such as CFM International, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon are also involved in the project.

first, 7 test aircraft will be built.

the 737 is an ideal plane for it really. right size, advanced and efficient. has many advantages over a prop driven plane. I'd say the short 7E7 might have been worth a look but without it being civil proven first it was unlikely.

The only Boeing planes that I can think of that have not been configured by the military are the 717, the 727, and the 777.

727 = C-22

The Boeing 717 is an offshoot of the old DC-9 so you could consider the C-9 Nightingale as a military member of the family. :)

I don't know of any military variant of the 777...yet. :)

still a little to new. plus very expensive. Could be a replacement for the 747 airforce one, in 10 15 years.
