I can't understand how the people inside it when it's flying at possibly 1,000s of feet with no possible means of escape would ever think they have this right

Some people think their rights can break the laws of reality...
Ah well the simple answer is to get your own plane, then you can smoke if you want without getting told off ;D Oh and if you turn into a giant fireball, well....

But what "rights", Oz?  That's what I don't understand about the traveling public and aviation.  (Never have.)  Not just on this topic, but all topics.

Smoking on US flights is not banned because of company policy, it was banned by federal regulation.  (Similar to the smoking ban in bars and other public locations around the world.)

What rights is the smoker violating by smoking in a public location?  What rights to air travel does the public have?
