well Incase you were wondering if the MOD had changed or learned anything, They havent.
My dad and a few of his work mates are now working on the newest replacement for the Lynx(no not more apachies) they are designing their own replacement. And guess what specifications they have to work to?
You guessed it. The Lynx ::) :-/
and well all i can say is, they are not happy. The Lynx has served us well for many years but now its time to think of a new design for our army and navy(mainly navy).
Now i am guessing this isnt to sensitive information as my dad told me, however if you dont hear from me you can guess this was sensitive:).

And then stand you in front of a firing squad at dawn. Oops sorry - I forgot - that was back in the good old days. :P ;)

Boer War - two officers executed for killing a Boer farmer (apparently questionable circumstances) - weren't they executed while sitting?

Remember - in those US states where execution by firing squad (convict's choice) is still an option, the convict is strapped to a chair.

So it wasn't always standing ..

That might be so for officers. The ordinary bods were tied to a post standing up. This was still a regular occurence on the Western Front during WWI. Anyone seen as a deserter or a coward was executed as an example to the others. Many of these poor souls would now be classed as suffering from shell-shock or a battle related illness. Some relatives are still petitioning to have them officially pardoned.

PS. Read this. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1399983.stm
During the period between August 1914 and March 1920 more than 20,000 servicemen were convicted by court-martials of offences which carried the death sentence.

Only 3,000 of those men were ordered to be put to death and of those just over 10% were executed.

Relatives of the men branded cowards have waged a long campaign to clear their names.

Records of the original court-martials are sketchy, most only including a summary of the trials and running to a couple of pages.

I believe that after the Easter rising in 1916, on of the ringleaders was too badly wounded to stand in front of the firing squad and so was shot sitting down.
