My wife's uncle, (her dad's brother), died in a Halifax crash after ww2. He was Alan Montague Gates. The article shows a photo of him, with a short account of his air force life together with a short account of the fatal crash.
Seems like the Halifax 3 had a flaw, where the rescue dingy, stowed in the wing, could accidently "deploy" during flight, causing it to wrap around the rudder/elevators in flight, with resultant loss of control. This crash, with loss of life, was not the first caused by this potential unsafe situation.
