The October issue of Air & Space Magazine has a nice article about Santa Monica Airport, it's history and future. According to the article it is the USA's busiest single runway airport. Due to the proximity of local residences it comes under fire constantly from it's neighbors regarding sound levels and air pollution. This was the home of the Douglas Aircraft Corporation and where many C-47s and A-26s were built. Now it is the home of several flight schools for the general aviation community and home base for many high profile private jet owners.
The City of Santa Monica would like to close the facility but so far the FAA has no plans for it's closure. There was also a paragraph or two about how Meigs field in Chicago was abruptly closed on the orders of the Mayor in violation of FAA orders.
