P- vs. S- designation

Postby Shane Stachwick » Mon Mar 17, 2014 11:37 am

I have always wondered this, but have never received a really good answer. In the US Navy, it seems that Patrol planes (Boeing P-8 Poseidon) and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) platforms (Lockheed S-3 Viking) have identical missions and similar capabilities. What's the difference? As far as I can tell, the only real difference is that P types tend to be land-based or flying boats, while S types tend to be carrier-capable. Could somebody verify this?
