Just being a boring so and so, reading the Donington Park planning meeting report to be presented tomorrow.

Anyway this cropped up:

18 letters of representation (including one from a Castle Donington Ward Member) have been received in respect of application 08/01356/FULM (of which 13 also make representations in respect of application 08/01386/FULM) raising the following concerns:

...and one of said representations (in bold!):

- Noise and pollution from helicopters
- Adverse impact on aviation safety
- Motor racing is anachronistic, excessively noisy, environmentally irresponsible, brings limited economic wealth to the immediate environs and has limited visitor appeal
- Environmental pollution, including toxic waste residues from high-octane fuel exhaust gases
- Harm to wildlife / habitat

Someone doesn't like motor racing!


However, reading on, that person may be a little disappointed:

It is therefore recommended that planning permission be granted in respect of both applications subject to the applicants entering into a Section 106 agreement to secure (i) the submission and implementation of Event Management Plans regarding access to the site for major motor racing events using the new proposed new pit and paddock facilities, (ii) the non-completion of the previously-approved club house scheme(s), (iii) the routeing of construction traffic and (iv) control over the use of the proposed club house.

Nothing about being able to get either in before a race meeting or more importantly OUT once the meeting is over  :-/ :-/

We'll see tomorrow. Either way, its taught BRDC a lesson. They weren't as invulnerable as they thought. Potential for a much more interesting and spectator friendly (once through the gate) track too. Something the British GP hasn't had since it left the natuaral amphitheatre of Brands Hatch in 1986.

I'd argue that its not at all better. Silverstone is a breeze to get into and out of. The track while not stunning in terms of overtaking was always one of the best to show the best cars at their fastest through the corners. Nothing in the donnington plans jumps out at me as interesting or groundbreaking. I believe Bernie did this simply because he knows the chances of it happening are very low (has nothing to do with tomorrow, but more to do with timetables and money issues) and he'll then have a nice mid summer slot to take a grand prix to somewhere like India or Russia where he's wanted to go for a long time now.
At the risk of being pelted with tomato's, I dont like Donnington at all. And I'd rather see Brands Hatch, Thruxton, Castle Coombe or Goodwood upgraded to host grand prix's before Donnington.

Planned far enough in advance it could be possible, bearing in mind the extra movements and revenue guaranteed by corporate traffic during the race week. You also have the potential of juggling operations to ensure minimum exposure of aircraft over the track - mainly by using the East-West runway, and one of the north turning departures.

They want all operations ceased. That means getting every airline to agree to cancel flights, DHL and co at the shipping hubs to give their deliveries a break. It simply wont happen. I just think there are far to many unreasonable expectations and demands being placed on the event for it to happen.

Last year, EMA averaged 10 movements per hour. Bias the fact that a lot of these will be early morning, late evening, and higher density on weekdays as opposed to weekend, then at the required times of the weekend, with enough notice, the airlines should be able to reschedule around slots made available on the day.
