Bernie Ecclestone is confident his plan to replace the current points system with Olympic Games-style 'medals' will be introduced in time for the 2009 season opener.

Why can't they just leave things alone.

Better strip Keke Rosberg of his world title then.

Always good to see them awarding speed (Ferrari), rather than consistency and reliability.

Maybe the old points system would be better. 10-6-4-3-2-1.

Ecclestone, 78, told The Times: "The FIA and all the teams are behind it and it will be done."

Can't wait to see how many all turns out to be.

It's Bernie up to his old tricks again... column inches in the close season.

If this happens I'll paint my car red and drive around the roundabout on the A320 which leads to the McLaren Technology centre with a prancing horse on the bonnet.

::)  ;)

Should make the gold medals chocolate filled. Then they can weigh the drivers at the end of the season. The driver that gained the most weight wins the championship.

LOL.
In some ways I wouldn't mind this. It would mean the guy who wins the most is the champion, it would also mean drivers actually try and race for the win.
However as someone on the autosport forums pointed out. This would be a bit of an issue when it comes to the constructors title. There would be little issue for a second car really since gold medals would only count.
A wider points gap is what is needed. A return to the old 10-6 or 12-8 even would be a good solution. Reward winning, but dont punish consistency.
