Does anyone know the age at which you can apply for a motorbike license in the UK, and what the resistrictions are (e.g. max engine cc).?

I can start driving in a year, but would probably rather take the bike test.

16- 50cc or 75cc mopeds
17- 125cc motorbikes
21- unlimited cc motorbikes.

You have to take the 21 exam to ride any CC of bike... not sure if you need the 17 and 21 ones though. I am leaving out those mopeds (they are a bit of a joke  :P ) and going for the 125cc exams at 17.

Don't forget you've got 2 types of test for your big bike licence, direct access and restricted.

It sounds a lot more complicated than it used to be. Direct Access. :-/ What's that supposed to mean? Who thinks up these stupid names? ::) http://www.elitemotorcycletraining.com/licence_options.htm

Is that saying that if you take the 17 year old Restricted (A2) that when you reach 19 you can use any cc?

'and then after two years the licence automatically matures so that you can ride any size of bike'

I thought you had to be 21 for any cc.

This bit is actually corrent, its classed as the restriction period, so after the 2 years have passed you are legally allowed to ride a motorbike with more than 33bhp

But with the new test comming in this year there trying to make it a lot harder for people to pass the a1 and a2 licences.

From that site it said
To be eligible to start training, you must have a full UK car licence, a provisional UK car licence with valid provisional motorcycle entitlement, or an EU licence with valid UK counterpart (D58/2) showing provisional motorcycle entitlement.

Do you need to pass a driving test before going for the bike test?
All seems to confusing :o

When you apply for a provisional license, it is for car and bike. If you pass your bike test, you get a full bike license that is provisional for a car. If you pass your car test first, your full car license is also a provisional bike license. Also get provisionals for, road rollers, some HGV's, caterpillars and a few other non-normal vehicle types ...............confusing isn't it ;D

To legally ride a bike on the road you must have passed your CBT (Compulsary Basic Training), you then have 2 years to take your full test and graduate onto things larger than a 125cc ;)

Add to that your theory and hazard perception tests ..... also valid for 2 years.
