quick question, does anyone know the power requirements of a typical car alarm?

Bearing in mind that a car has a 12 volt battery under the bonnet, I think it is safe to assume......

I don't know what the requirements are...but it wouldn't be much because the alarm wouldn't be pulling hardly any current unless it was going off.  When the car is locked and the alarm active, its going to be in an idle sleep mode.  So, the current draw should be next to nothing.

Car alarms can't draw all that much power, if they did, they wouldn't make them. However, that said, your car battery can store A LOT of power. The average car battery holds about 100 Amp-Hours (AH), or 10000 mAH. The current needed to power most electronics ranges from 10-100 mA, anything over 150-200 mA would simply create too much heat, especially if there is no active cooling, and would melt the pcb. So  it will take a long time for even the most demanding electronics to kill a car battery.
