For once I think DC is talking sense. 22 cars into the first corner with cold tyres, that is asking for trouble.

Tyre blankets from 2009 banned

Agree with DC there, I think banning tyre blankets is just asking for trouble.

Not only that, but as DC says in the article the tyre pressure needs to be lower to compensate for the expansion when the tyre heats up.
That's an accident waiting to happen.

Not quite sure of that one. They use Nitrogen, the same as the aircraft industry because it does not expand that much with temperature increase and will not support combustion in the event of a fire.

Wait a minute - why do they now have a high speed pace car? What was one of the things they said contributed to Ayrton Senna's crash...

...low tyre pressures in cold tyres? ::)

How much heat do the warmers actually retain?  When did we start taking the Scot seriously?

But yes, it does seem bad.  I figured all new regs would be aimed at costs or efficiency, how does this play into that?

Silly :P

I always wonder about that one. Maybe it was air back in Senna's day?

Quite a lot - up between 80-100degC when they are on...
