Hi all.  Im no really into modifying cars with outrageous body kits, but i do like nice subtle finishing touches.  So, my plan for the weekend was to paint my brake callipers and drums (before giving the car a good clean and wax).

After removing the wheel, i cleaned the callipers with hammerite metal degreaser and a wire brush.  Hosed down, then cleaned with wonder wheels wheel cleaner, and allowed to dry.

Then i took a small pint brush and painted the visible parts of the calliper.  After 2 coats, here is the result.

Drum brakes? what kind of car is that.  To my knowledge, drum brakes have not been used on any passenger cars since the mid-late '80s in the US.

Its a Renault of some sort.
And drum brakes are still quite common in Europe.

its a Renault Clio.  its a small city car, so there is no need for dics all round.

they still use drum brakes in the us on modern cars.  i remember i had rental chrysler sebring (3 years ago) and it had drums at the rear.

Naw, drum brakes are still quite common.  Maybe the really brand new cars have went away from them...nut many newer cars still run drums in the back.  I know its 10+ years old now, but my 1996 Camaro has rear drums.  Plus, my sister has a 2001 Toyota Camry with rear drums as well.  Drums are common in the back since only about 20% of the braking is done back there.

Drum brakes on the front however, you don't see that anymore.  

My family currently has six cars that routinely sit in the driveway/garage and all put my PT cruiser have drums in the back

Furthermore, I jsut got done replaceing shoes, and rebuilding wheel cylinders on my 1965 mercury comet :-)

I think I'll stick with my Grand Am, 4 wheel discs make me feel safer.

You don't need four discs if the breaking performance is crap anyways. ;P

my 3 series has discs all round thats a 96 model which surprised me.

Depends on the make, model, and options. I own two autos of the same make, model & year('89) but different performance options. One has disc/drum, the other has 4-wheel discs.

The brakes work decently on my car. Sure, the pedal is a little stiff, but once you get used to it you dont notice that any more. Well... until you drive a car with a soft brake pedal, then it feels really weird and I end up pissing people off by stopping short...

I'll probably end up putting better brakes in it once I  have the money, but right now I dont, so I am stuck with a really stiff pedal.

In Eurpean cars, the brakes are depending on the power of the engine.

My meager 68 km Opel Astra has diskbrakes in the front and drumbrakes in the back... the more powerfull ones have disks all around...

My bosses new Mercedes S-class has ventilated disks in the front... must drive pretty well...  ;D

Almost all cars have drums for the handbrake, but the smaller ones have no discs on the rear wheels
