What's the most fuel effecient auto, regaurdless of whether it's an SUV, sedan, whatever, for under 10 grand? I've had my sights set on the Echo, but they seem to be hard to find.

I know there is an unfortunate looking Audi that passed the 100 mpg mark a few years ago.

I know its a little over 10K but my friend bought a brand new off the lot Honda Civic with a stick last spring for $13K. He gets like 35mpg and it was a brand new car. It was basic (although it has a CD player and A/C) with manual windows and such.
So, I'm sure you could get a 2002 or 2001 for $10K and it should get about the same mileage.

Aye, I was just stating what us europeans can get hold of. Performance, for a decent price, and kind on the wallet too...

You guys deffinately get better mileage thats for sure. But, I don't know how performancy 9.5s 0-60 really is-my little Camaro coupe (3.8L) is clocked at 7.4s 0-60 and it really isn't that fast, more quick than anything else. Although I sure can't beat 53mpg. If I got that kind of mileage, I would take 2.2s additional 0-60 seconds I think.

If he wanted something faster with 15-20mpg less then he could get a Golf GTI.

Or the cheaper (and by all accounts better in the automotive press - except the pretentious
Evo magazine) Skoda Octavia vRS...

...
Same car underneath the body work, and several grand cheaper!

You could indeed.

Golf MkI GTI though..... I think would out perform a Skoda of a similar vintage.
