Yesterday I saw an interview with a Dutch guy who has imported several Nissan Skylines. He claims their engines can be tuned to ... hold on to your butt... 1.300 HP!!!!

That's more than a Bugatti Veyron! And only with a 2.8 l instead a 6+ l engine!

Those Japanese engineers are true geniuses!

Now, I won't start about the "need" of such an engine in a sedan, bu still ... 1.300 HP ... pfew...  8)

And most of that can be done with just chip tuning... The engine is designed to take much and much more that the power output that the Skyline has standard.... This because of the pact between japanese manufacturers to limit car power.

Japanese are crazy about mountain racing.... The drift on the curvy mountain roads at night... saw some footage of it... Highly crazy and dangerous but  o so cool!

The engine might be able to produce 1,300bhp, but can the gearbox and drive system transfer that power to the road? I doubt it. That is why the Bugatti is so special.

I'm not convinced. I'm not convinced that a 2.8 can safely and reliably deliver 1,300hp either.

I think this is one of those cases where the motor, if properily tuned with all the super expensive parts and racing fuel might be able to produce 1000+hp, but probably not nearly that amount of torque.

I'm sure the drive train also has to be extensively modified to handle that kind of power.

yep the skyline is capable of 1,300bhp and more! ! ! ! ! but with standard gearing and a chip conversion, intercooler etc you are probably looking around 500bhp to start with, if you want to really push the limits of this car, just take a look at this skyline here: Andy Barnes Sumo Skyline although it may be pushing 1000bhp with the kit he's running, if he ran it on a higher octane fuel then it could possibly be running at around 1100bhp.........
If i can locate the video i've got of the HKS Skyline which pushes out around 1800bhp (its on gran tourismo 2) i'll post a link to it.

The issuse like woody said isn't the HP itself, but how much is transferred to the road. Buggatti had serious problems getting all of theirs to tranfer onto the road, and ended having to create a new set of tyres, and computer systems to do it. I dont believe you will ever get the full benifit of a skyline with that much power.

I think that benefit has nothing to do with this at all. Whether you can transfer 1000+ BHP to the road is also slightly irrelevant. It all comes down to this.

Of course, once you've managed to get 1,300 horses poking out of your Nissan could it then out perform the Bugatti?

What about tuning the Bugatti engine? What do you suppose that could produce if pushed?

Naturally the first step in tuning your Veyron would be in removing the speed limiter.

Well, thats the problem with all cars.  Horsepower is measured at the flywheel for production cars...not at the wheels for this very reason.  Every drive train will suck up some horsepower as it is transfering it to the ground-you simply can't make a perfectly efficent machine (I believe it is impossible according to the laws of physics).  If you get 70% of your flywheel HP at the wheels, you are VERY efficient.  So, as you guys said, the key is to maximize your horsepower at the wheels.  An 800hp car with a very nice drive train delivering 75% of its power to the ground will beat a 1000hp car with a drive train only delivering 50% every time.  So, this is an issue for every performance car.
