Oops! Sounds like an interesting time!

A nova, come on, hit a brand new ferrari, but not the Nova..  ;D

I too have had the brakes go out, but fortunately we weren't too far from home and there was little traffic at all lights we went through on red! (Not on purpose mind you! )

I'm not one to criticize (having once let a front rotor on a '74 Polara get so worn that the calipers fractured it;D), but what about the so-called "parking brake" (really an emergency brake)? It should stop you, if it's in good order... it's cable-operated; no need for hydraulic pressure.
You know... that handle on the floor near the seat...? ;D

BTW... when that rotor failed on the Polara, I was approaching a light on a steep incline... hit the emerg. brake right away, but the rear shoes  (drums in back) were also so worn it didn't help much . Good thing the light was green and I could make a turn there- that old car weighed 4,000 pounds, and there was a wall of cars ahead, lined up to enter the Holland Tunnel...!! :o

Ah, that "OH @#$%" feeling :-X

Brakes worked just fine on my old 89 Bronco II.  But I had really thick rubber floor mats.  Took off one day to meet a friend.  Got to his place which has a very long lane to get to the house...usualy drive 20-25 mph down it.  Got to the end of the lane to find that my floor mat had shifted up under the brake.  At this point I was down to under 20 mph but also at the house.  So it was eather turn towards the yard (full of large trees) or hit the house.  So I choose the yard.  I quickly found a nice sturdy tree :-/  Good news, I stopped, and only had a couple cuts and bruises.  Bad news is the Bronco was totaled.  Good part was I got a 91 F-150 out of it :P

It had a parking break.  But it was one you had to use your foot for and in a situation like that you dont have time to get your foot up high enough and over far enough to do any good   :-/

lol, did I forget to mention that it was winter so we had ice and snow on the road?

Both my dad and I pulled on the E-brake many times to no avail, especially whilst going down the one hill with the idiot and his dog who decided they could walk casually across in front of us.....

I think he got the hint though when we hit the horn repeatedly! ;)

These pics were taken litteraly the evening before my little accident.  All clean and shiny right after a wash and wax job.  Was taking the pictures because we were going to sell it :-X

Very nice condition for an 89.  Had only about 70,000 miles on it :o  Only 10,000 on the new trans.  Ran great...Problem was it only had a little 2.9L V6, didnt have a lot of power if I had more then 1 passenger, and it was horible in winter :-/

A few minutes after waxing

And theres the one little problem that could have made for a better outcome.  Notice the parking/E break is in a very odd spot.  No possible way to step on it quickly.  Kind of a dumb place IMO.

It was an automatic, not a stick.  Thats just for the 4x4 options.  Dont have any pics from the next day.  Didnt want them personaly.  It was my first vehical and kind of my baby :-[  Wanted to add to it but decided to try and sell it insted.  Pretty POed at myself since it all could have been avoided if I had paid more attention to the mat before I took off.  Amazing what a large tree can do even at just 15-20 mph :-/

I wrecked my first car too. An '89 Grand Am. I pulled out in front of a plumber in his big plumber van. It was my fault, and I didn't have insurance, but he let me pay him off in installments of $250 every two weeks. When I gave him the last check, he tore it in half and handed it back to me. Mr. Mike the plumber is a great guy!

ALROT: the word you are looking for is Bumper. Now did you say gasoline is free?! I'm moving to venezuela!!

I've successfully done that but I'd best mention that one needs to remember to pull back on the release at the same time or you'll lock up.

Even if he has to swim there with a barge in tow :o ;) ;D!

For free gasoline I'll help towing it.

Happy to hear everything worked out fine, Alrot. I'm waiting to see those screenshots.

You not have a compulsory MOT where you are? In Britain all cars over three years must have an MOT every 12 months. It is illegal to drive without it. An MOT is basically a medical check for a car and they are very strict. Funny I say that - ours got back from its MOT today. It passed. ;)

Never had to use one of those pedal-type emerg. brakes, although I've driven my share of vans that have them. Not sure I could've got to it in time, either... and those cables tend to get slack if you don't check 'em once in a while- might not have done any good.
It's odd that they put it there; must be marketed as a parking brake, as they don't want to use the word "emergency". Stupid. On the old Fords I used to drive for U-Haul, the handle was a great big thing in the center of the console, painted bright orange. Very easy to grab quickly if needed...
