Suspension Basics

I've never really taken a likng to cars, except maybe in body design, so when it comes to anything technical, I'm as lost as a giraffe in Sea World.
Thing is, I'm playing need for Speed: Undergound 2, and to get the best race performance, you have to tune your car for each race mode: Circuit, Drag, Drift, Street X (tight turns) and URL (more compact circuit).
I understand most stuff, but the suspension confuses me. Especially what's the diffenece between shocks and springs? Can anyone explain, in layman's terms, what each of the following things does?
And how changing the setting in the front of back would affect handling? I'm quite lost.
