Hmmm, those look interesting.  Why are they switching, is it just because they are a little more difficult to see (when they are off)?

No, just for you. So you cant see us coming down the road. No big dome to see.

All I can think of for our Dept - ChaChinG! $$$$$$
some of the CHP officers around hear have the lights INSIDE their cars. . .i think that is atleast a bit unsporting of them ;)

to make matters worse the cars are not two toned either (all black or all white)

Yeah, they have lots of unmarked cars here too-they probably do up in the Portland area as well (where Deputy is).

slicktop = with flashers somewhere else than the roof??

unmarkeds in holland are:
- tuned Passat W8 (8 cylinder), main camera vehicle for the TV stuff. flashers on teh top of the front window and in the foglight spots
- stock Volvo V70 with T5 engine (most). one magnetic flasher to put on the roof, and 2 in the bumper
- Subaru Impreza (2nd model revision, WRC engine but not the body kit). haven't seen that one with the flashers on
- BMW 7 series from the model year where the headlights aren't completely flush with the front. Used by SWAT team and for high-profile prisoner escort, magnetic flasher when in a hurry, usually motor escort clearing the way for these.

A slicktop is any emergency vehicle where the lights are not on the top of the vehicle. So, yes, what you said is exactly right. Most slicktops you'll see are either detectives,  lieutenants, captains, chief/sheriff themself, and traffic vehicles. Nowadays, we like the element of suprise. Washington State has a bunch Volvos,  BMW station wagons, older cars - such as 1990's, Buicks, even a freightliner (semi truck). I'm not sure how they are all deployed for sure, but I believe they are for road rage applications.....

I saw a Lane County Sheriff's car today with lights like that-the first that I have actually seen.  They looked pretty cool-but I must admit that I like the classic red and blue lights better (just because of how they look-both really stick out anyway).

I'm guessing the new lights are designed more for better aerodynamics than simply being harder to see.

No, harder to see is the idea behind the change. We could care less about aerodynamics, so long as the car still has the "get-up-and-go" power. Its all about stealth these days...
