i believe they work on a side shift system. Basically, you either push a button and then it will switch between the two and the gear stick becomes the shifter, or you push the gear stick to the side and then it becomes a manual/automatic, how the gear changing works is where the side shift comes into play, you push the stick to the right to change up and then push it to the left to go through the gears, it could also work pulling the stick back for don the gears forward for up the gears, thats how most rally cars work i believe.
I think Ferrari work on a semi-automatic paddle shift system where the paddles behind the wheel change gears much like the F1 cars.

Check out any sites for Fiat .. Jaguar.. Renault and Aston Martin as these all have options for semi automatic gear changes.

cheers

This is actually not a new idea.  There were several cars back in the 50's and 60's that had manual automatic transmissions.
