hey guys
 does anyone here have any experiance with importing cars? if so could you please give me an idea of what sort of costs would be involved with a car around the $20,000 price range?? also the tests it would have to undergo. this is a back up plan incase we dont move to the States or canada, but i am looking to get an intrepid, but the dont sell them here, closest thing is a Neon, and even thats under the chrysler name here.
Also my mom is looking to take her car with her if we did move to the US or Canada, what kind of tests would it be subject to and what kind of costs would be involved. And yes she could buy a car like it over there, but this is her "dream car" that we always have to hear about how shes had to work to get this and so on:) so it means more to her having this car than another one.

I'm not too sure about the costs, but if you're importing to the US or Canada be prepared to pay some hefty fees to get your car brought up to emissions standards here.  It can run into some pretty big bucks. :-/

Your best bet would probably to get in contact with a dealer in Canada or the States, as they should be able to give you some ideas of the cost involved to ship a car over...

Also I think any car imported from outside the EU would need an SVA test...

i will know for sure in the coming weeks if the information will be needed, as we are starting to look into the options now for jobs and moving.

You may find out it's easier to sell your car and get a new one when you get here.

lol i keep saying that, but my mom wants to keep this one for the reasons above.

Depending what you were thinking of taking with you, you could put the car in a container with the rest of your stuff (that is if you're taking furniture etc with you). My parents are probably of to Oz in the near future and it seems as though my dad's car (a large MPV) will fit with all the furniture in a container. Unfortunately my mother can't take her car as in Oz they don't do Skoda's...

right now we are still not sure whats going to happen, my mom is looking into jobs starting today,she is going to start with this country(although highly unlikely to find one) then she will look abroad. if we do go, what we take will prob be as minimal as possible(mainly due to alot of stuff being old and needing to be replaced so cheaper to buy new stuff) and other stuff not being compatible with north american appliances as such(things like Videos DVD, TVs, playstations radios and so on) so alot of the money we make from selling that stuff would prob go on sending the car, and getting the tests done. anyone know how they would send it?? i know it is possible by plane but i would imagine its a hell of alot more than by boat
