Good Old Murray Walker

Postby TSC. » Wed May 03, 2006 8:07 am

Did anybody else see the Masters GP at the weekend? (Nigel Mansell etc).

I had to rewind the commentary briefly to find out that Murray Walker actually said (mid-race):

"& there's some banging & contact there between Elio De Angelis & Stefan Johansson"

Normally that would be fine - but Elio de Angelis (god speed) has been dead for (almost exactly) 20 years.

It was actually quite nice to hear Murray C**k it up again :D

Cheers,

TSC.

who doesn't love him? greatest motor racing announcer ever, mistakes and all, no-one puts the energy and enthusiasm into it like he does. great to see nigel win again, this series is like being 6 years old again:)

I met Elio de Angelis and sat in his F1 car when i was about 8 or 9, at an open day at the Lotus factory in Hethel, Norfolk.. thoroughly nice chap, I've his autograph somewhere, alas no pics.

I presume he was mistaking Andrea de Cesaris with Elio de Angelis - unless of course Jean Alesi was racing, in which case the mis-identification would be entirely reasonable*...

*anyone know why? ;)

Murray wouldn't be Murray if he didn't cock-up regularly ;D And that is part of the reason we love him 'cos he admits to his cock-ups and can laugh at himself. An unusual British attribute 8)

I believe De Angelis was one Alesi's heros when he was an up an coming driver in the mid/late 80s.
