New REX update

REX has released its new version, REX Essential PLUS! It is free to all existing customers. It's a big download, it took me all of yesterday's afternoon, but it is worth it. New and improved graphics, all new and way more powerful weather engine, the ability to download user-created themes from inside the program, etc etc... DO NOT MISS THIS UPDATE!!

I have to say I like the new weather engine with smooth cloud transitions, makes it almost impossible to tell when the weather is reloaded.

I found after updating that my sim would crash when flying the NGX over Orbx scenery with the weather engine running. I tracked it down to being an OOM issue with the textures (both NGX and REX had been on 4096). I turned down the REX clouds to 2048, cirrus to 1024 and that removed the random in flight freezes and crashes.

Even my system with its 8gb of ram, 3gb graphics card and 4.8ghz processor can't handle everything on max resolution for extended periods!

If only we had FSX with Microsoft flights code improvements and smoothness...but that's another argument altogether.

I signed in and spent three hours downloading only to get errors when extracting this.

Finally it came up and when I tried to install it after several minutes I got another error.

You can download it from their website or if you bought it from an online store such as flightsimstore, its now also on there in your download links.

REX Essential Plus Overdrive

I still can not find a link for this.

REX2 Essential I have.

Yes Rex Essentials Plus is available in both overdrive and non overdrive versions. The only difference is that overdrive contains additional HD textures that you may or may not use. The PLUS update that both have received is the main part with the improved UI and new weather engine.

Thanks "raptorva", will try another download this afternoon as no luck getting it to download entirely right now.

It keeps quitting and showing errors half way through.

Had nothing but problems with this download...

I wonder if it is possible my REX program with Essential has just reverted back to just REX?

Right now it shows 3.0.2012.0522

But before I started this new download it showed
3.1.2012.1028.

However when I start REX it still shows REX Essential and I get the noise also...

No worries. On the Rex forums it seems a number of users have had the same issue with broken downloads and I believe they are working on resolving it.

That's the version number I'd had before installing overdrive plus. There's a PDF Rex released on their forums just before releasing plus that shows the version number update progress both for essentials and essentials overdrive versions.

It is a bit confusing but I worked it out eventually. Rex helpfully put up in their FSX releases section the different downloads you need depending on which base version of REX you're starting with.
