Am I missing out by not owning the LDS 767?

Postby snippyfsxer » Sun Mar 27, 2011 1:46 pm

Need some purchasing advice:

I've heard such good things about this bird over the years, and feel like adding another plane to my collection (like I really need another :D).

I guess my question is somewhat vague.  Can someone answer these questions about the Level D?

1) Does it support surround sound?  A lot of addons have Stereo sound that only supports engine sounds out of the two front speaks.  In this day in age I find that unnaceptable.  I want to hear the engine sounds from behind the cockpit, since that is where they are.

2)  What issues will I have to deal with under Win7/Acceleration?  I've heard that there are some problems, but going through their forums, it is kind of difficult to come up with a "summary" that I can use to make an informed purchasing decision.

Thanks

LOL,

Really, all joking aside, it would be really nice if someone could tell me about the Engine sounds on this airplane (surround sound or not).  It would be ashame to have to sign up for the Level-D forum itself, before buying, simply to ask a single pre-purchase question; especially since I know that there must be some owners of this craft here on SimV.

I do not have the 767 model but like you I have the MD-11 from PMDG. Recently I decided I needed another airliner and was drawn in by the PMDG 747, which I purchased with the 800 series also. I was a little disappointed in the 747 and I guess that was because the MD-11 is so damned good. I believe that the MD-11 is the widebody king and anything else will be less.
Do you have the FSLABS Concorde? It covers alot of ground and is challenging to learn, very well done and runs well on my system. The outside engine sound effects is a little off, but that is my only gripe.  Skip

The LDS 767 is quite a solid tube.

I owned the LDS for FS9, though never repurchased it for FSX because I became more interested in lighter aircraft and because I was drooling at the visuals with the Captain Sim 767 and went with that instead.

I can now answer my own questions about this airplane:

First Off, the Bad News.

The stock sounds only support the 2 front speakers, because the engine .wavs are saved as Stereo, not Mono (FSX needs .wavs to be in Mono format so that the program itself can route the sounds to the appropriate rear channels).

Now, the Good News.  I guess I'm several years late in joining a chorus of praise for this airplane, but I now will add my compliments as well.

All of the issues that have affected Acceleration users, namely a problem involving engine-start, have been fixed (apparently, the latter, within the last couple of months).

Once you get this plane up and running, fully patched up to spec, with the Winglet addition, the VC texture enhancements, and some better sound...maybe throw in some McPhat liveries (which are being released for this plane now), and you have, as Rocket_Bird said, a "solid tube"

I was expecting this plane to be dated...but it isn't.

Snippyfsxer, I followed your lead and purchased the Level D product. You mentioned in your last post after the initial setting up of the 767 with patches and some different sound that you are quite happy with the product. And I remember the comments we both held towards the MD-11 as being one of the best tubes all things considered.
I have to say, in my opinion the MD-11 is still the better of the 2. The stock sound of the Level D is horrendous on my Logitech 5.1 sound system whereas the stock sound of the PMDG MD-11 could not be better imho.
I have to admit that I have not yet fully digested the 767 FMC and controls, and I can see the potential for another great learning experience, but if I cannot get past the sound issue, and I found the Concorde exterior sound also to be problematic, lots of reverb, then I will just go back to the MD-11.
Would you be so kind as to give me your sound setup and maybe another 767 sound track that you might have used? And any patches you might have downloaded also. Tnx, Skip

The updates I applied:

1)Andre Folkers(sp?) VC mod, to update the look with better textures
2)The Winglet mod
3)The Acceleration "Engine Start Fix"
4)EHSI fix, which addresses a minor issue with magnetic heading versus true heading.

All of these patches and upgrades can be found in the Members section of the Level-D forums.

Additionally, I purchased several McPhat liveries

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. If I had gone back and reread your original review of the product, then I would have been able to answer some of my own questions to you. Sorry for that. I had no trouble with the download or installation, so I have not yet gone in to get the downloads you listed, but I will look for them now.
The 767 is indeed a pleasure to fly and handles very well for me. I did notice the mouse button "stickey keys " you alluded to and very frustrating to get yourself into position in the vc just to able to use some of the buttons, switches etc. I have seen some sound sets available for download on this website and I believe I will try a couple of them because anything will be better than stock.  Thank you once agn for your information.  Skip
