If anyone here is using 3d lights redux, do you experience any slow-down as a result? I'm thinking of getting the software but I won't if it has a negative impact on FSX framerates.

Hi Tech Diver,
I didn't notice any performance impact from the effect.
Just be aware that this is an addon where you really have to read the manual, if you want to use it for addon aircraft other than the FSX, Acceleration standard aircraft. For the standard aircraft the installation is automatic. For other aircraft you have to edit the aircraft.cfg and sometimes the panel.cfg file and there are some tricks (e.g. for landing lights that are attached to retractable gears). There are also more effects included than are listed in the manual and it might be worth while to have a look in the folder and try some of the other effects.

This was one of the better payware purchases that I have made in my opinion.  On my system, I do notice a slight performance drop, using it in FS9 fwiw when the effect/s are paired with lots of AI traffic.

That's the nice part, that you can also use it for AI as well as user models.

Thank you both for your responses. Based on your critiques, I will definitely purchase the product.

Bought it, love it, highly recommend it!

This product has greatly improves the realism of night flying, not just for your own aircraft, but for the AI ones as well. All stock aircraft are updated when you install the product, and custom ones are very easy to update manually. The only minor complication is that the Aircraft.cfg files are updated so that only the original airlines are visible. You will have to manually merge any repaints that you may have added, but that is no problem since your modified cfg files are backed-up.

Really nice addon, I didn't notice any significant performance loss.

Awesome.  Glad you got it.  It is honestly one of my favorite FS addons that I've ever installed.  Really makes for some nice screenshots as well.

I concur. What really surprises me is that not all that many people know about this addon. I accidentally came upon it while looking at some really nice screen shots. I had to dig around until I found a photo that listed the addons that were used. Even a search for "Redux" in this forum yields hardly anything.

The naming is a bit odd and who knows if it had a more normal name if more people would have it.

That's true... but you have a lot of good configurations for most of the popular addon aircrafts on their official forum.

If you need help adding them to your AI aircraft just say so since the AI models don't have a panel file to control the nose taxi light you have to use a different method.

Mike, could you possibly expand upon this? I am not familiar with this technique you speak of.

With the AI models, you can't really have the nose wheel mounted taxi light illuminated during takeoff, flight and landing phases because once the gear goes into the well, you're left with a 3D light effect hovering below the fuselage in place where the taxi light would be if the gear leg was still down.

For user aircraft, you can make an entry into the Panel config file to trigger the nosewheel light effect to go out when the gear is not down.

Yep that's true.  However when they first came out last year, I noticed a lot of people posting configs that they didn't even bother to check.  They simply took the configs that were currently in place and swapped in the SW light effects instead.  Due to the way the SW effects look, this doesn't always work.

It's just another example of people being lazy and not bothering to check their own work.

I would think by now though that the settings have been pretty well tested and confirmed.

Mike, thanks for the excellent information on the AI aircraft. I will implement the type-6 taxi light as you suggest.
