Question about RealAir Spit...

Alright, so I finally got paid ($125 USD) and I have my sights set on the RealAir Spit. Naturally, I'm very excited, but before I get my hopes too high, I have a quick question. My comp is not what you'd call high-end. It's fairly good though, and I can run most high-detail freeware stuff without too much of a hit in frames. Still, after seeing the intense detail on the RA Spit, I'm a bit wary. Will it run smoothly (by smoothly I mean, at least 10-15 FPS, with graphics set somewhat high) on a rig with the following specs:

- Pentium 4, 1700 MHz
- 256 MB of RAM
- GeForce2 MX graphics card

It's probably a dumb question, and I'm fairly sure it'll run just fine, but I'm just REALLY paranoid about where my cash goes (since I have no set job, and rarely get any cash coming in). I want to be 100% sure that it'll run good before I go plunking down $31.

Well it'll hit your frames pretty hard, so I dont know if it would be the best choice. If I were you I would upgrade your system insted of expand your hanger.

Cheers

Hmmm, in that case, I'm screwed, as an upgrade isn't in the works for at least a year... :(

Still, better I found out this way than after already spending the cash. Thanks for the heads-up though.

I guess I'd best sack that money away for something else then.

Lazer I'd look at getting an extra stick of RAM and changing the MX2 if I were you. Go up to 512MB and look around for a second hand Ti4000 series card as cheap upgrades that'll give you a lot more performance for very little cash ;) It is worth it if only to run the RAS ;)

Agreed, but I have found and heard that all of the Real Air add ons are very easy on frame rates.

I certainly hope so, as I was really looking forward to trying their products.

If not then I'll just follow ozzy's advice, and get a new stick of RAM along with a decent PCI card. Especially since those are the only two obstacles that really prevent me from owning many other payware addons.

I had the RA Spit installed for a while (reformatted and lost it) and was fine on frames for me. And my system is rather low-end.

Hmm, that sounds promising. Is it by any chance comparable to my relic? If so, I'd be thrilled. ;D

Perhaps an example might help to put things in perspective. I can run the Project Mach 2 Concorde (which I've heard is relatively framerate-taxing) just fine with only one or two small framerate hiccups from time to time. I can also run several other highly-detailed planes without much difficulty (the Spartan, POSKY jets, Sandim's planes, etc.). If the RA Spit's effect would be similar to those planes, then I shouldn't have a problem.

Well, I would'nt suggest it for now...but once you do upgrade, it's a definite must for any sim...I love the guy's over at RA...all their products are just amazing 8)

I can't see you having a major problem, however it may be worth contacting Rob at RAS, his email is on the contact page. If you explain your system and worries, he should be able to offer advice.

Rimshot, if you bought from RAS and lost your Spit.exe file, send them a nice email asking if it's possible to have a DL link again. They should accomodate you even if you lost the reciept.

Well, I e-mailed Rob at RAS, and he gave me a speedy reply. He says that my problem would be the texture loading on the plane due to my low amount of RAM, and said that although it does get good frames on most low-end PC's, my system's on the borderline.

Right about now I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to take my chances and just buy it, or sit patiently and wait until I can get a new computer (in 2007...). I was planning on getting more RAM, but I can't...

Long story, won't bore you with the details... :-/

If you can run POSKY stuff you'll be fine, they EAT frames! But I would invest in another stick of RAM, even a 512 one is not too expensive. Look on ebuyer.com for some.

To be honest, the POSKY jets usually get around 8 or so FPS, but I've gotten so used to it by now that it doesn't bug me. It does give me some hope though. Nonetheless, I'm gonna see about getting some RAM, just to be on the safe side.

Yes, only 256mb of RAM is only just enough to run Windows XP on! Get a 512 stick to go with it and then you'll have 768, much better!
