737NG FMC update

I wanted to update my FMC for the NG and after I downloaded the new sid/star database and the new AIRACS cycle, I ran FS and the FMC wasn't working correctly i.e. the flight plan wasn't complete, it didn't recognize runways airports etc.
Would anybody be able to give me a step by step guide on how to properly update the FMC.

The navdata goes into
FS9/FMCWP\NAVDATA

whereas the SID/STAR files should be put in FS9/PMDG/SIDSTARS

I've done that, but when I try to plan a flight with the fmc say from EGKK-EHAM It never plans the route anymore unlike before I updated it.
