Information Wanted Please

Postby Flying Trucker » Sun Sep 03, 2017 10:10 am

Good morning all... <<q

A damp and cool morning it is here in Canuckland...

Got two emails from Flight Sim Pilot Shop and the Flight Sim Store.

Both have Labour Day Sales on.

Well wanting to save some pension money thought I would purchase these several items.
(1) New Alabeo-M20R Ovation
(2) GAS-Brunner Winkle Bird Package
(3) GAS-Stampe SV-4B
(4) GAS-Davis D-1
(5) Milviz-DeHavilland of Canada DHC-2 Beaver

Now none of these were on Sale and there was quite a price range difference between the two stores.

Now I know Rich you have the Milviz Beaver and I was reading from the Milviz Site that there was or could be a problem with the Radios and Navigational Equipment. Do you or anyone else who has purchased this product have a problem using that equipment in Microsoft FSX Acceleration :?:

Has anyone purchased the Alabeo M20R Ovation :?:
Would really like to know how it works in Microsoft FSX Acceleration.

Does anyone have one or all three of the "GAS" products :?:
Do they work well in Microsoft FSX Acceleration and how do you like them :?:

Looking to add a few more General Aviation Simulated Aircraft to my Hangar for Grassroots Flying and any comments would be most appreciated.
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Hi Doug

The Milviz Beaver flies just fine for me, I don't yet know how to use nav stuff radio beacons (Questions will be coming soon on that  ) but the Satnav and Weather Radar work with very well, there has been a few updates since hitting the shelves so I would think the wrinkles have been ironed out. The only downside is the repaint situation due I believe to a change in the paint-kit, but I'm sure there will be loads on the way soon. I really like the Beaver it's one of the few planes I have, that the variants behave differently, the STOL variant on floats (part of the expansion kit) is a real bugger to trim on climb out and you really have to concentrate to keep her under control. I've learnt a lot about trimming, prop/throttle interactions and keeping an eye on the manifold pressure and cylinder temp, it's great fun. The A2A Piper Cub with Accusim was good and the Beaver is on a par. As for the GAS Planes I have the Stampe SV-4B and Davis D-1 and must admit to being tempted to get the Brunner Winkle Bird (what a fantastic name) but I ended up getting the Just Flight C-46 Commando. I quite like the GAS stuff, their not up to Carenado/Alabeo standards but their still fun to stooge around in. With the Otter coming soon I'll have some of the best bush planes and I'm looking forward to a winter of exploring the PNW, Alaska and Canada, with the occasional trip to England and Italy Photo Scenery. PC Aviator have a good sale on till 09:00 Tues http://www.pcaviator.com/store/home.php 50% off Lionheart and 40% off GAS, I would recommend the Lionheart Kodiak a good all round Bush Plane but it's got one of those new fangled Turbine thingies turning the prop. :o

Sorry to ramble on

Cheers
Rich

Fast plane:
The Alabeo M20 (previously Carenado) is a good option despite it has steam gauges instead the G1000 of actual real Mooney.
Sometimes I have read about Carenado's flight models not being accurate, in this case, if you don't adjust rudder and elevator trims to take off position the plane is unable to go straight and take off. I don't know if it is realistic but if you purchase this plane don' t forget this.

Classic biplane:
You can save money downloading the Tiger Moth from Ants here at SV instead of the Stampe:

STOL, bush, heavy duty:
The MV Beaver is the best option as workhorse.

Good morning All... <<q

Thanks Rich
Much appreciated for the information, just what I was looking for.
Looking forward to the DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter also.

Now not sure this is going to help or not Rich...
Never got qualified on the DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver but being a STOL Aircraft and being the little brother of the DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter I am sure it shares some of the same flying characteristics.

There is a difference in the Tail Plane and Elevators between the two aircraft.

Been awhile Rich so bear with me... ...

On the Otter the entire Tail Plane moves up and down when trimming the aircraft out...marvelous feature
I believe only the Beavers Elevator has a Trim Tab.

Now climbing the Otter with Climb Flap you get great performance if you climb it like a Helicopter...that is nose slightly down in the Climb.
So in the Otter use Take-Off Flap...Trim...Climb Flap...Trim

For every Power Adjustment, Gear Change and Flap Adjustment...Trim...Trim...Trim

So in your Beaver try going from your Take-Off Flap to the Climb Flap...a little forward pressure on the yoke...keep it at climb speed and trim...trim...trim

See how that works Rich...like I said...it has been awhile... ;)

Hi Rich

Here is the type of Tail Unit that was designed into the STOL Otter

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruciform_tail

Combinations of Flap Types are also incorporated into aircraft design for STOL...Maneuvering...ETC.

Hi Doug thanks for the info, in addition to the Beaver I noticed that some the Flight Replicas Super Cubs also climb like hell and adopt a very nose up attitude and are also tricky to get into level flight. That having been said I am enjoying learning as I go along with different planes. As I said my next step, which is long overdue, is to learn about the different radio aids and the ILS systems.

Cheers
Rich

Hi Doug

Talking of Bi-Planes the one I can whole heartedly recommend, would be the SibWings Antonov AN-2 the mother of all Bi-Planes. She's got loads of switches and knobs to twiddle, re-defines slow and low, has been beautifully modelled, has loads of repaints and can even fly backwards. :o
http://www.sibwings.com/an2.php
A real gem of an aircraft.

Cheers
Rich

Remember where the fire extinguisher is to, she will catch fire if you don't keep an eye on her.

Thanks Rich for the information and Link.

The Link was quite good...well all but the Music...

Thirty years ago there was an Antonov AN-2 at the Oshawa Airport...a visiting aircraft I managed to get in.
Quite the Greenhouse Canopy.

Years after that another Antonov AN-2 showed up at the Trenton Airbase....not the same aircraft but still very impressive to walk around.

It is $23.57 Canadian Dollars right now.

Will see who has a Sale on right now... ;)
