Speeds are now back to normal.

I bought;
KCMW Cushman Meadows Airport
KTVL Lake Tahoe Airport
KTEX Telluride Regional airport
and KSEZ Sedona Airport.

There were others that I wanted, but this late at night there were no banks open to rob. :D

OAM, from your personal experience is Orbx really that good a product? I've been thinking about buying it but with my computer I wonder if it would be money down the tube.
How is it on frame rates for example? I've seen some of your screen shots and they really look great but then again you have other enhancements too don't you?

An Aircraft Mechanic only needs two tools, Duct Tape and WD40.
If it moves and it's not supposed to - use the Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to - use the WD40.

Do you have a Laptop, or a Desktop computer?

If it's a laptop you might be better off staying with what you have.

If it's a desktop, then you could make a very nice move up, IF you're willing to buy a different CPU.

Your graphics card is perfect for FSX, and even OK to good with Prepar3d V3. V4? Maybe OK.

But not so for your CPU.

First I have to make a couple of assumptions. If it's a desktop.

There is a good chance that your motherboard has an LGA1156 socket. That is the place where you put the CPU.

This is how your "i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz" CPU compares with a few other CPUs.

From CPU Benchmarks
Image
BTW - if you intend to stay with FSX, don't worry about an i7. FSX will gain very little from it.

Why replace your CPU? Because the more detail your computer can handle, the more worthwhile the Orbx scenery will be.

What many people don't know, or think about, is that at it's most basic level Orbx is photoscenery.

However, it's photoscenery done right. All the buildings, trees, etc are placed on top of the photoscenery.

But like I said, that's at it's most basic level. Other things come into play as well, such as the best mesh (height detail of the terrain) out there.

So with your old, slower, CPU you would have to cut back on some of the scenery detail. Some, but not all.

As an aside, photoscenery is less demanding than standard FSX scenery.

YouTube has a few hundred hours of "How to replace your CPU" videos. There are steps that have to be followed, but it's pretty easy.

Here is a shortened video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuGwPnWrpow

So if you wanted to replace your old i5..... How much?

Probably less than you think.
Intel Core i5-680 3.60GHz 4 MB LGA1156 Processor $99.99

Or used - Intel Corp Core I5-670 3.46 Ghz Processor $44.95 + free shipping

Personally, I'd have no problem buying the used CPU.

The last thing is your RAM.

Although FSX, being a 32bit program, can't use more than 3.4 GB, FSX along with your operating system would benefit from the extra RAM. Because, right now BOTH are sharing your 4GB. And THAT will cause slowdowns that you don't want.

Is Orbx worth it? I would have quit yeas ago if I had to use only the standard FSX scenery. I did try another well known scenery maker's scenery but wasn't impressed. When I tried FTX Global (Base) I liked it, and it has only gotten much better over the years.

Yes. It will be expensive getting started with Orbx because there are two absolute purchases that you HAVE to make;
FTX Global Base Pack - New and better scenery for (almost) the entire world. The North and South polls are pretty poor.
FTX Global Vector - This VASTLY improves the coastlines, lakes, rivers, roads, bridges etc. It really does make a significant difference, even flying at 32,000 feet.

There are a couple of "strongly suggested" purchases;
openLC North America - This package is almost as good as the dedicated areas such a Pacific Northwest.
openLC Europe - If you never want to fly in any of Europe, you can skip this one. But if you ever do fly there, it makes a huge difference.

One relatively cheap suggestion is the ORBX FTX Trees HD. If all you do is takeoff and fly high, you could skip this one. ORBX FTX TREE'S HD Review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnFJgdndtWQ

Normally, Orbx sales run from 20% to 35%. With the 48% off sale going on now, you might want to buy the Orbx basics and try them out. See how your computer does with them, and THEN decide if you need the CPU & RAM upgrades.

Goodly evening.... <<u

Was not going to order anything else until orbx got things straightened out at the FSS.

This does seem like too good of a deal to pass up.

Couple of questions

FTX Global Range

I already have FTX open LC North America, Alaska, Canada
Do I need to purchase
FTX open LC North America which includes and supersedes the one I have?

Will purchase
FTX open LC South America

North America

Already have Pacific Fjords and Pacific Northwest

Will purchase
NA Central Rockies
NA Northern Rockies
NA Southern Alaska

Not sure what to do about filling in the gap "Tongass Area"?

Looked at two airports that look interesting as they are grass strips

Veronia Airport 05S
Israiles Farm Airport WA56 (might have spelt Israiles wrong)

Do not fly the Northern California Area so could not see the point in ordering any of that.

Ideas would be most appreciated.

Cost is $184.25 AUD which should be about the same $185.00 Canadian I think

The FTX Global Base Pack gives you better scenery for the whole world and is well worth getting.

If you have openLC North America, you have it all - North America, Alaska, and Canada. Just make sure to run FTX Central to pick up any updates/improvements.

I've just bought FTX openLC South America, but I'd say that openLC Europe is a better deal because it has been updated many times over the years.

"Will purchase

For you in particular, I'd suggest taking a look at KCMW Cushman Meadows Airport. It has a real nice "small airport, out in the boonies" feel to it.

After my recent trip to the Olympic Mountains, I'm looking to "move" from Concrete, Washington to the Olympic peninsular. The mountains around Cushman Meadows Airport has the right feel to it. The mountains really shoot up into the air, just like real life.

The sale lasts until 22 August. Get a little now and thing about what else later. :D

Hi OAM! In regards to your earlier post... Yes my computer is a desk top model. Thanks for all the great info!!
I had been kicking around the idea of changing to a i7 CPU hoping for improved FSX performance So now, after reading your comments I'm glad I didn't.
The i5-680 does sound like the next logical step for me. Several months ago I bought a new hard drive and the W7 (64 bit version) which I'm using strictly for FSX.
I have noticed an improvement especially with HD aircraft like some of Carenado's offerings. The scenery I've kept down to just some of my favorites.

To answer another question you posed, yes, I do like to fly in Europe, especially the U.K. including the Channel Islands and the section of France adjacent to the islands.

I appreciate your explanation of the different packages especially the Global Base Pack and Global Vector. I wasn't sure if both were needed or just "nice to have."

I'll definitely consider your recommendations ( and I swear in front of everyone reading these posts that if everything implodes I won't blame you for your advice.)

Thanks again!

Good morning Gentlemen:

Wondering if I am going to have a problem with space needed.

The Geek Squad has my Flight Simulator on "C" Drive which has 96.1GB Free of 237GB

My DATA "D" with Downloads and everything else is 1.80TB Free of 1.80TB

Now these figures were taken from My Computer this morning.

I already have:
FTX Global Range
FTX open LC North America...USA...Canada...Alaska
But
FTX open LC North America supersedes that so will need to purchase that +
FTX open LC South America

North America
NA Central Rockies
NA Northern Rockies
NA Southern Alaska

Airports
Veronia Airport 053
Isralies Farm Airport WA56
And the Airport you mentioned OldAirmail

Also Anthin mentioned Tongass Fjords I believe which will tie everything in.

Now as I know little about computers do I need to call and get some memory added or what direction would you suggest I go?

Hate to lose a good deal...48% Off is not bad...

One thing I found was I could not find the SIZE of any of these Add-ons when I clicked on their Properties and with only 96.1GB Free on "C" Drive not sure just how fast this thing will run if I did get all those programs downloaded.

Any help would be most appreciated... <<q

Doug.I think you will be OK with what space you have left.
I believe you will only start to have problems if your drive
is about 80% full.
