I had been kicking around the idea of changing to a i7 CPU hoping for improved FSX performance So now, after reading your comments I'm glad I didn't.
The i5-680 does sound like the next logical step for me. Several months ago I bought a new hard drive and the W7 (64 bit version) which I'm using strictly for FSX.
I have noticed an improvement especially with HD aircraft like some of Carenado's offerings. The scenery I've kept down to just some of my favorites.

To answer another question you posed, yes, I do like to fly in Europe, especially the U.K. including the Channel Islands and the section of France adjacent to the islands.

I appreciate your explanation of the different packages especially the Global Base Pack and Global Vector. I wasn't sure if both were needed or just "nice to have."

I'll definitely consider your recommendations ( and I swear in front of everyone reading these posts that if everything implodes I won't blame you for your advice.)

Thanks again!

Laptops are nice, but with a desktop you can add a little here, and a little there as you can afford it.

So with what you have I'd go for a faster i5 CPU.

Next would be 8GB of RAM. When I used FSX and went from 8GB to 16GGB, I saw little if any difference. That's totally different with a 64bit flight sim.

Then, it's almost a matter of the more the better. I have 32GB now, and for the most part, about 8GB of that isn't needed.

Only when New York City X is running in prepar3d V4 do I need more than 16GB.

I do, however, have many additional programs running along with P3d V4;
Active Sky for P3Dv4
Active Sky Cloud Art
Air Manager V3.X BETA
SPAD.neXt
Little Nav Map

I'll often have Google Maps in the background to help me find interesting places to fly.

After the CPU and RAM upgrades you should be able to fly with most of the settings on max.

Probably most, but not all settings. There are some settings that I just don't care about. You will have your favorites too, and some that just don't matter.

If you do feel the need to squeeze out a little more flight quality, consider an SSD just for your flight sim. The faster that the data can come off the drive, the sooner it can be used.

A 250GB will probably work out well for you if you don't overload FSX with too much scenery, and too many aircraft. Otherwise, go for one about 480 to 500GB. Check the size of your FSX Folder to get an idea of the size you'd need.

Good morning Gentlemen... <<q

Got another question before I order anything else from Orbx.

Now what I am looking to add in Payware covers a good deal of the Pacific West Coast of Alaska and Canada and down to the North of California in the United States.

Purchasing this without Tongass Fjords is close to $200.00 Canadian.

Now I am wondering if Orbx is planning to come out with a Package being one Download that would cover all of Canada, a Package being one Download that would cover all Alaska and a Package being one Download that would cover all of the United States :?:

This would seem to make a lot of sense if they did that.

The way it is now one is purchasing bits and pieces of areas.

Tried looking on their Forums and could not see anything that would remotely come close to this idea unless I have missed something.

Still waiting for them to get the Payware Downloads transferred to the Orbx Program from the Flight Sim Store so I can Download two updates.

I hate to lose the Orbx 48% Sale but can't justify making the purchase if in another month or so something comes out from Orbx that is better if you know what I mean.

The Old Girl still says I am a Procrastinator... :o

If you do not or cannot afford Orbx Full
Fat regions,Ftx Global might suit you.It improves
the default scenery a lot.You would then have to
get Mesh, Landclass etc.

If you want the best for western Canada, Rockies,Alaska,
Oregon,N.Calif. the full fat regions are the way to go.
Plus Tongass Fjords.

It is a lot of money but if you buy say, a couple
at the sale and then more at end of year sale.
Could be the way to go.

Are you still with FSX Gold?
If you are,do you have Steve's Fixer for DX 10?
Makes a huge difference to DX 9.

Anthin.

Some good advice there in your post Anthin. On another note, I do have Steve's Fixer for DX10, but I never really got into it. Firstly, it looked VERY complicated to set up and secondly too many add-ons say not compatible with DX10. I didn't want to go through all that trouble for say 50% - 60% of my add-ons and then have to disable it again for the other 40%-50%. Or am I missing something? Can ANY add-on be made DX-10 compatible with Steve's fix?

Hi tjitah.

If an Aircraft does not work well.IE.It shows as
just a few bits ,there is a way to fix this in 98%
of cases.I am talking older planes from FS 2004
or some that work ok in DX 9 but not in DX 10.

Open the fixer. If it wants to update let it.
Press "Other" button".Then press "8 Bit Texture Fix.
Apply.Do this before starting Flight Sim.
When finished flying Exit FSX.Open Fixer and untick
the 8 bit Tex.Fix.

The fixer will give you much better results.
If you are unsure of any settings just get back
to me.

Regards.
