Installing payware aircrafts, ie... self extracting.exe

Sorry, to ask this. I have looked through the pages here to try and find the answer to this, but no luck. Searched many different ways, still no luck.
Downloading from Simviation, most are simple unzip, and drop and drag to the simobject airplanes folder. However, adding self extractors, ****.exe files such as Iris etc... some place themselves into the FSX main dirctory. Is that correct? I'm still a little bit confused on some things, any help would be great.

Honestly, your better off , unzipping them to a Temporary folder,,, and then opening that Temporary folder and Copying & pasting them where they need to go,, WE / US Flight Sim Veterans who've been at this for the last 10-15 years learned NOT to trust too many of those - Self Installers - it really depends on the person who made the aircraft as to how knowledgable they are about the file / folder structure of a particular simulator !

Many of us in the past had things stuff going everywhere but where it was supposed to go,, with those Self Installers, we learned tho, do it Manually , not use the self installers !!

Theres plenty of Simmers on here if you need help further !!!

I"d have to add a big amen on what jetranger said. Trusting selfinstallers is a big risk if you don't know the author real well. Payware is slightly different but still can be risky. I personally learned this lesson the very hard way!

Really appreciate the feedback. I was thinking the same thing. As with Iris, Alabeo, they come with the .exe, so its pretty much the only way to install them as far as I know. What I guess more of a pin point on the issues is: Should I have pointed to the main FSX folder or should I have pointed to the simobject folder? Do these self installing adds have to be run with the .exe because they are designed to automatically place gauges into the gauge folder, sound, panels, etc.. into the right spot? Yet in the main directory it also has the uninstall too for the aircraft. I know how to ad them when I get them from SimV, I always do the read me file to make sue I do as instructed to ad them. By following the .exe install, will this file by placing it into the main FSX folder, hamper my load times? FPS? Another good question? I really do want to thank you guys for taking your time with this new boot. Being as my system is a tad weathered in speed and age, although it still rocks like a champ and gets 40fps with slider at unlimited, the CPU is a bit low @ 2.4 GHz stock. My Diamond DA42, needs more FPS. Now, at this time, I'm not funded for a upgrade anytime soon. (A bit disabled)

Well,,,, it kinda goes like this, YOU might have 1 self installer that'll install everything fine like its supposed to into the main FSX Folder, or maybe the Main Airplanes Folder, MAYBE ??

The next Self installer depending onhow its set up and WHO did it - and Depending what and how much Detail is involved in that particular aircraft, it won't install the same way as YOU did the 1st one the 1st time !

Reason is, there is NO same structured way for any of this, 1 Aircraft will install 1 way, and another Aircraft with more Gauges and other stuff may install differently than another one.

You really have to take the time to READ the Read Me file that comes with whatever Aircraft, and thoroughly knowing how your flight simulator Folder & File structure is Organized and laid out, that's very important is knowing that.

Trail and error for each different aircraft, best I can tell ya check those read me files carefully !!!!

My advice would be to direct the installer to a location outside the FSX directories. Anywhere will do providing you know where it is. (I use a Temp folder in my Download folder) It's exactly the same as extracting a zipfile. You can then install the aircraft manually in the traditional way.

If on the rare occasion I get an addon with an auto-installer that cannot be redirected I delete it. Simple as that.

One thing that I have noticed, over the years, is that the old; "ClickTeam" auto-installer, included with a download, always seemed to work faultlessly.

As with all addons it would depend on who configured it. The Clickteam installer is free software popular with many freeware developers. Fortunately the install path can be redirected for manual install.

Are you really expecting to have that much trouble with the software you just paid for?

If you have trouble with their installers, let them know.
