OpenLC now out.

Postby OldAirmail » Wed Jul 16, 2014 9:57 pm

OpenLC EU is now out & much cheaper than I thought - USD $36.54 - AUD $38.95 - GBP £21.34 - CAD $39.22.

The bad news is that the servers are old Commodore PET computers with 300 baud dialup modems.

Times for each of the four European sections (North, South, East, & West) range from 10 minutes to 20 hours PER SECTION.

Even the FTX: Global wasn't this bad.

No pictures yet - Download too slow.

The Orbx openLC is, at the moment, a flawed package. But I don't expect it to stay that way.

There are a lot of people who have no problems at all, and a fair number who have some problem.

I'm in that latter class.

The same thing happened to me when Vector came out. But within a month or two they had it patched up to the point where I switched from DON'T buy, to DO buy.

Their first step in fixing openLC was to post Setting your openLC entries.

I tried it, but it made almost no difference.

SPAIN

First - as close as I can come to "standard" in FSX/Prepared.

The openLC actually looks like "photo scenery" than what you normally get. It's even MUCH better than standard Orbx FTG: Global.

Having concentrated on Spanish photo scenery & Google satellite images recently, I have to say that openLC passes very well as "believable" scenery.

The Bad & the Ugly

This kind of stuff is constantly popping up in front, under, and behind you as you fly.

In the first three pictures you can see how the ground updates its self.

No one else seems to be hanging around so I'll post a few more pictures.

This is a shot that I took back in February (I think).

In country áreas it looks like photoreal, but still in Spain, this is Barcelona according to ORBX, ridiculous.

This is the real photoreal:

They should have revised this mistakes in relevant or characteristic places, as they have done with Mt. Vesubius.

Back to Spain.

At the moment I have just under 30Gig of Spanish photoscenery downloaded.

In some areas of Spain the openLC does an exceptional job of depicting the actual countryside.

All the more so in that the scenery from eckard.uv.es comes with some REALLY GOOD mesh.

BTW - That mesh is not buried within the photoreal scenery. You can download and install only that part if you want to.

This picture is all the better in that it's from a flat area somewhere south of Lorca (if I remember correctly).

I have almost 30GB of photoreal Spain, and that's only a few small sections of Spain.

Lets face it - The only way to have an area look the way that you know it should look is photoreal.

That's probably why most of us fly outside of the area in which we live.

For that, you have to strive for believable scenery.

For AllenCS.

The scenery above is from a dedicated group of people. Not a company of paid employees.

What this means in reality is that each section, even thought it is photoreal, isn't without it's flaws.

The countryside, and mountonous areas (because of the free high grade mesh) are, normally, very very good.

The cities for the most part are flat. Simply flat.

Land in the center of one and you can look around for miles.

And that is acceptable for free scenery.

If you paid them enough for a decent living, free software could be much better.

But of course it could no longer be free software, could it.

Some people seem forget that companies are made up of people who just want to earn a living. And if the company, its self, can't earn enough money to survive, it goes under.

And if the company goes under, people get laid off.

As to the "bad & ugly". This does work for most people. Obviously something on/in my computer is causing a problem.

When this has happened in the past, Global/FTX has resolved the problem quickly. I refer again to FTX: Vector.

It was so bad that I uninstalled it. About a month later, not only was it fixed, but it was far better than I could have hopped for.

No one is required to pay for scenery, and the scenery within scenery. Become an adult.

They invented a new season

Yeah. I saw that too.

On the other hand, some places have more, or less, seasons.

When I lived in Minnesota I found out that they had only two seasons - winter and road repair.

What I'm beginning to do with the Spanish scenery is to look for airport and city sceneries to make it more believable.
