Just bought Megscenery-Florida

Postby Modlerbob » Fri Jun 06, 2014 9:39 pm

I found this payware on fspilotshop and decided since most of the time in FSX will be flying over Florida to get the entire state. From altitude it is pretty realistic looking but I was disappointed at a couple of things. I didn't notice any additional 3D buildings or structures and a few suspension bridges around the state are still only depicted as flat roads. Didn't notice any extra detail at the airports either. I'm not sure it is worth the $65 it costa if you order the discs.

All that Mega Scenery is - Photos layed flat.

there won't be anything to neat or great, its mainly for those that like to Fly at 25,000ft to 40,000ft levels then it looks great, but drop down to 1500 or even 300 feet and everything appears flat as a panacake, buildings, trees, bridges water towers, stadiums, etc.

I Agree, not worth the 65.00 ya shelled out, when you could of got ORBX / FTX Scenery.

I'm afraid that he's right.

I bought Megscenery-Pennsylvania and was similarly disappointed.

High over cities and they look ok. Lower over forests and mountains isn't too bad.

But when you come in to land your plane, everything looks like a Steven King novel.

There is some great scenery out there that combines the best of FSX/Auto-gen, photoreal, and HIGH quality mesh.

These are, generally, small areas.

But to do a large area as Florida would take up way too much room on your hard drive.

Here are some samples of that type of scenery-

Well, as usual, you live and learn. I had trouble with the couple of freeware airport add-ons that I had tried and I guess I didn't do enough research before buying the mega-scenery product. At least it did download, unzip and load without any headaches. I just expected the bigger cities to have more 3D buildings and for the bridges to be a lot more detailed.

As Mr Jetranger said - if you fly high, they could be worth the money.

However, more often than not, I fly low.

Unfortunately for you, Florida isn't very mountainous. So it's unlikely that there will be anything, state wide, of high quality photo-real scenery. Unless, of course, you want to create it.

The best bet might be to get Orbx FTX Global. This'll give you believable general scenery.

After that get FTX: Global VECTOR.

There's no question - it adds up to a lot of money. But I think that it's well worth if.

Alternatively, you can search for, and download specific Florida sceneries here on SimV, or elsewhere - fsx florida scenery freeware downloads.

I never did like Photographic scenery, since I often/mostly/always spend a lot of time at, or near ground level...
Then it becomes a BIG disappointment!
I much prefer good Autogen Scenery...with trees and buildings which stick up into the air... :D ...!

There are lots of excellent add-on Autogen Scenery, mostly free-ware, which is much more realistic, when near, or on the ground!

Paul...I like sticking-up things!.... ...!

Typical, excellent freeware scenery for me...>>> http://www.calclassic.com/scenery.htm

Unfortunately, although it is easy to make photo real scenery, it is also extremely time consuming to do it right. That's why most photo real scenery packages are lousy.

This...>>> http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=iscen3

Its what I/we use to add various objects to the existing scenery. Select, drag, re-size, rotate, and place.
All whilst FSX is running in real time!

easy-peasy!

Getting back to the lack of scenery for Florida. Florida is the fourth ranked sate by population and therefore should have a solid customer base in the flight sim community. The standard scenery pac for New York, California, Mass. and Pennsylvania all have a much higher level of detail in general and specifically with structures such as bridges. Suspension and truss bridges are reasonably depicted in those states. However a quick flight around the major river cities of Florida, even with megascenery loaded shows all bridges as causeways barely above sea level. Even the famous Skyway bridge from St. Petersburgh to Bradenton across Tampa Bay. I'm surprised that other Florida based FSX customers have not noticed this.
