FS98 Can Not Find Cache Files In Cache Folder On Start-Up

Released in 1997, FS98 was heralded at the time as a great new Flight Simulator.

FS98 Can Not Find Cache Files In Cache Folder On Start-Up

Postby SpecterFan » Mon Jun 14, 2010 3:40 pm

Thanks in advance for any help that may come my way.

Problem: EVERY time I launch FS98 I receive a number of error messages one after another. Basically FS98 can not find "X" cache file in cache folder. "X" cache file will not be used for this session. (Click on "OK" button to continue)

This happens for each cache file in the folder. Then FS98 launches.

Any idea what's wrong? How do I correct this?

Thanks again for any help.

Hi. It's a very long time since I last used FS98. The first thing that springs to mind is that you did a Minimal install leaving the scenery on the CD. If you run FS98 without the CD in the drive it obviously won't be able to find it.

FS98 is such a small program that a full install will fit easily on any modern computer.

Please tell me if this helps.

I did do a full install and I have been running the program with the CD in the drive.

OK, it was worth mentioning. My only other suggestion is to uninstall/install FS98.

If you did a full install of FS98 it should run perfectly well without the CD in the drive.

Just a couple questions:
Do you have more one hard drive and/or have you had more than one install of FS?

I have an internal CD drive and an external DVD drive. I have been running it on the CD drive.

I have FS98 and FS2002.

Here's a thought: I installed to the location I wanted NOT the location its preset location. Maybe a file needs to be relocated or eliminated?

I just noticed something in your post. Sorry. In answer to your question, I do have multiple hard drives: two internal and one external.

I suggest uninstalling FS98 & starting again. You can install all versions of MSFS to any location you wish.* During the installation process make sure you select the option to install all the scenery to the hard drive. Then you will

PS. As you have FS2002 I don't understand why you're bothering with FS98.
:P ::)

Anywho...
I have FS98 and FS2k2 both installed and have more than one hard drive. The older, larger hard drive was the 2nd drive from a former (OS98) computer and FS98 was originally installed on it; my new install on the newer (XP) drive does similar to what yours does -- however, mine is looking for scenery files in the old location.
