Hey Guys and Ladies,  Here is wishing you all a very nice day. I just received an answer  concerning my lack of PC  understanding.    Those of you new to PCs as I am sure could be helped GREATLY by Webbs' advice he just gave me.   I did as he suggested and "FOUND" what each program in my PC  does.    The only thing I can say is that this info is invaluable to understanding the  "other programs"  installed.    THANK YOU SO MUCH.          caveman

Thanks but I'm not sure what I did other than point you to the Black Viper mirror, which explains some of the XP services and offers some general advice as to which ones can be safely turned off.

I don't think anyone knows what each program on his or her PC does - I certainly don't.

Just go through the processes in the task manager and shut them down. If your computer crashes, assume it's required to run the system ;D

I'm an expert at locking-up and crashing my  PC.  ;D    I do THAT at  least  3 or 4 times a day.   I'm getting better - - - it used to be  "ah-em"  a few more times than that. ::)     The advantage of thinking  I  at last discovered what all the programs do is called ignorance.  ;D   When I do get things right,  I'm sorta like a kid let loose in a candy store.  [ Mr Webb,  I didn't even know  THAT place was on my PC. Don't sell yourself short]      Sure do appreciate your help.   caveman
